All About Brow Lifts

Brow lifts are common cosmetic procedures that are also known as forehead lifts

. Brow lifts help reduce sagging skin and fine lines around the eyebrow and forehead regions. Creases on your forehead and the bridge of your nose will be diminished as well. Other rejuvenation procedures such as eyelid surgery and facelifts are commonly done along with a brow lift. Often times, a patient may think that he or she needs an eyelid lift because sagging eyelid skin is noted; yet, the loose and lower positioned brow is the cause of the excess lid skin.

The perfect candidate for a brow lift is an individual who has sagging eyelid skin or wrinkles around their forehead that are severe enough to warrant surgery. Patients who are healthy, optimistic, and expect realistic expectations are ideal.

Types of Brow Lifts

There are four common brow lift procedures. These are called coronal, endoscopic brow lifts, open brow lifts, and temporal lifts. For practical purposes, each of these will be discussed, but the endoscopic technique has for the most part eliminated the use of the other methods. You can expect wonderful results with each of these techniques.

Coronal Brow Lift

This is a classic method in which the brow is lifted through an incision in the scalps hair bearing skin, hidden beyond the hairline. Skin is removed in order to lift the brow and forehead. One of the biggest advantages of this procedure is that the scar is hidden and the results will last longest out of the other three. The disadvantage of the procedure includes a raised hairline and a long, albeit, hidden scar.

Trichophytic Brow Lift

This is a similar procedure that also camouflages the incision within the hairline, but not into the scalp proper. Skin is also removed with this technique but only from the portion of the forehead with no hair. This means that the lift is achieved without the hairline being raised.

Temporal Brow Lift

Temporal brow lifts are done through a small incision on the temple area. While the incision is hidden within the scalp it may be visible on the side of the forehead. This is a less invasive technique compared to the two aforementioned procedures, but lasts only about 3 years on average. With the use of this technique only the outer part of the brow is lifted.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

Endspocic brow lifts are currently the most common type of lift performed. Through three or four tiny incisions in the scalp, and with the use of specifically designed instruments for the procedure, the forehead skin is elevated, trimmed and lifted. The skin is positioned and is then secured to the scalp with the use of tissue glue, sutures or a Velcro-type material which is later removed. Endoscopic lifts are well-tolerated, and require little post-operative care.

All forehead lifts are accompanied by bruising, swelling, temporary or rarely permanent loss of sensation, the possibility of hair loss, and infection among other risks. On the contrary, one can achieve a beautiful result with no untoward effects.
