America's Most Dangerous Play Toys

The Consumer Products Safety Commission reports there were an average of 162

,500 toy-related injuries among children under age 15 during the three year period from 2005 to 2007. During this same three year period, 71 children under age 15 died as a result of their injuries. These figures include 26 kids in 2005, 27 kids in 2006 and another 18 in 2007.

Ride-on toys account for over 25% of all injuries, making them the leading category of toy related injuries. Non-motorized scooters accounted for almost all (84%) of the accidents involving ride-on toys. The majority of the injuries were lacerations, contusions and abrasions to the head and face area. After ride-on toys, the second leading toy category involved with toy-related injuries was flying toys, which accounted for 11% of all injuries.

The majority of toy-related deaths involved the following types of toys:

1.Choking on small toy balls was the cause of 9 deaths in 2005, 4 in 2006 and another 4 in 2007. This underscores the importance of keeping small toy balls away from young children, especially kids under age 3. Kids normally stop mouthing objects by age 3 but in some cases they continue this behavior beyond age 3. Parents need to recognize their children might not be ready to handle some toys, even if their child is within the recommended age range shown on the label.

2.Riding tricycles was the second leading killer with 4 deaths in 2005, 4 in 2006 and 5 in 2007. In these cases, the tricycles did not cause the deaths but did contribute to the cause of death because kids rode their tricycles into the path of dangers such as riding into swimming pools resulting in drowning, riding into roads resulting in getting run over by motor vehicles and riding off the edges of high places.

3.Non-motorized scooters were the next most dangerous toys. Scooters led to 3 deaths in 2005, 3 in 2006 and 2 in 2007. None of these accidents were caused by the scooters. In every case, the cause of the accident was motor vehicles running over kids who rode their scooters into roads.

4.Non-inflated balloons were the next biggest leader in toy-related deaths with a total of 7 deaths during the three year period. In these cases, children put the balloons in their mouths causing their airways to be obstructed.

5.Stuffed toys led to 3 deaths during this same period as children suffocated on their stuffed toys.

It is important to note that many of the deaths and injuries, the accidents involved toys but were not caused by the toy. For example, in the case of motor vehicle accidents the child was playing with the toy at the time of the accident but was killed by the motor vehicle, not the toy.

With increased awareness of the dangers, parents can make a safer environment for their kids. In summary, the key steps parents can take to reduce these hazards is give their kids more parental supervision when playing with ride-on toys, keep young kids away from small toy balls, and keep kids on tricycles and scooters far away from motor vehicles.
