The bigger birds need to have things to do and interact with people more. As your pet bird gets old, it will require care that is specific to birds. By providing this additional care, your bird will live longer so you can enjoy its company for an even longer period of time.

Just like with people, as your bird gets up in years you should everything in your power to make sure the pet is doing good. What is the life span of a pet bird? This is determined by what kind of bird it is and the surroundings it is living in. A finch will survive for up to five years. Medium sized birds will stick it out for up to fifteen years. A few of the really big birds may just out live you.

In order to be sure you can take care of a bird, you will need to know how long it is going to live. How healthy the bird is as it gets up there in years depends on many things. One of the things that humans who own a bird have control over is the environment they live in. Just like a human, clean water, the right diet and exercise will most likely prolong the pet bird life. Eating right will keep your bird strong. Exercise will keep it in shape so it can play in the later years.

Birds like company, without it they will not survive. This company can be you or another bird companion. As you little feathered friend gets older, watch for changes in its looks and the way it acts. If you keep the little guy locked up in the cage for most of its life, the behavior will look the same. As your feathered friend gets up there in years, its feathers will look dull. It will sleep more and not move as fast. Sounds like an old human. If your bird is old and has other birds with it, watch to make sure it is not getting chased away from the food and water by the younger ones. You have to be diligent and make sure your pet bird gets what it needs. You can also give your bird vitamins to keep it healthy. The bird poop is a way to keep tract of just how healthy your bird is.

If the poop changes from what it usually is, this could be a warning sign that something is not quite right. You need a veterinarian that deals with birds close to you. A yearly checkup should be done to keep your bird it tip top shape. Yearly checkups will give you a historical record of the health of your bird. Birds are like men, they hide it when they are sick. With regular checkups, you will know what is going on with your pet. Just like people, the older we get, the more likely we are to get sick. So goes it for the birds.

A good vet that deals in birds will be able to give you the guidance and tools needed to keep your pet bird around for a long time.
