, and much more, Kirron Kher is one of the most endearing persons in Bollywood. Her onscreen appearance is very heartwarming and her flexibility in characters is almost unmatchable with that of most actresses.

Early Life

Kirron was as Kiron Singh on 14th June 1955, in a Jatt Sikh family at Mumbai, India. She studied at Punjab University, Chandigarh. She later came down to Mumbai, to marry her first husband Gautam Berry. After divorcing her first husband, she married actor Anupam Kher.

Acting Career

1980's

Kirron made her debut in 1983 Punjabi feature film AASRA PYAR DA (1983) and received enthusiastic reviews for her performance. She took break from films after her divorce to raise her son Sikander Kher. Kirron next made an appearance in PESTONJEE (1988) alongside her husband Anupam Kher.

1990's

KARAN ARJUN (1995) was Kirron's comeback movie. She went on to do Shyam Benegal's SARDARI BEGUM (1996), which was a story of a singer and courtesan, known popularly as Sardari Begum. Kirron Kher played the lead role of Sardari Begum in this movie and won National Film Award: Special Jury Award for this performance. Her next appearance on the silver screen was in Kalpana Lazmi's DARMIYAAN: IN BETWEEN (1997). She played a character of Zeenat who rises to fame because of her supposedly eunuch son and then looses it all in the fury of emotional debacles. The performance was applauded by critics.

In 1999, Kirron starred in Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film BARIWALI (1999) a drama about life of a lonely middle-aged woman. Kirron played the role of Banalata, a woman who is a victim of ill fate. This splendid performance of Kirron was awarded by a National Film Award for Best Actress Award.

2000-2005

Kirron's next power-packed performance was that of Sumitra, mother of Paro in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's DEVDAS (2002). She was nominated for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for this film. Kirron also appeared in a brief role in KRAZ: THE BURDEN OF TRUTH (2002) in 2002.

KHAMOSH PAANI (2003) was a Punjabi-Urdu film in which, Kirron played the central character of Ayesha Khan, who is abducted during the partition of India. The film revolves around the life of Ayesha, who not only refuses to kill herself after abduction, but also marries her abductor and settles down, radiating positive attitude. KHAMOSH PAANI (2003) got many international awards at various film festivals.

From 2004 onwards, Kirron started off with playing roles of mothers of the central characters in films. She starred as mother to Shahrukh Khan in MAIN HOO NAA (2004), to Rani Mukherjee in HUM TUM (2004) and to Preity Zinta in VEER-ZAARA (2004).

Kirron starred in only one Hindi film in 2005, Ketan Mehta's MANGAL PANDEY: THE RISING (2005), as Lol Bibi, the mistress of a brothel. She also acted in Taranjeet Singh's English film, IT COUL BE YOU (2005). Her character was that of Mrs. Dhillon, opposite Ravi Baswani.

2006-2010

RANG DE BASANTI (2006) saw Kirron in the role of Mitro, mother of DJ, played by Aamir Khan. She received a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for this role. She also appeared in Kajol's comeback movie FANAA (2004) as her mother. Kiron next played mother of Shahrukh Khan in KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA (2004). She was also seen in the character of Mrs. Dutt in I SEE YOU (2004).

Kirron starred opposite Dharmendra in APNE (2007). She also acted as Shahrikh's mother in Farah Khan's OM SHANTI OM (2007). Her character, Bela Makhija which had emotional and comical touches to it, was appreciated. Kirron also starred in the title role of Mummyji in MUMMYJI (2007).

In 2008, Kirron's performance in DOSTANA (2008) was adored by the audience. She essayed the role of a mother who thinks her only son (played by Abhishek Bachchan) has turned gay. She also Starred in SINGH IS KINNG (2008) in the role of caring rose shop owner. Kirron also played Vinita Sen, an emotionally troubled divorcee, who is trying to find a new life in Mumbai after migrating from Kolkata, in SAAS, BAHU AUR SENSEX (2008).

Kirron's 2009 movies gave a glimpse of her versatility. She played loving aunt Dolly in

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ (2009).on the other hand, Kirron also played a terrorist in KURBAAN (2009).

RIGHT YAAA WRONG (2010) saw Kirron in a small supporting role. She also acted in a Malayalam film ALEXANDER THE GREAT (2010).

Television Career

Kirron acted in a bunch of television serials which include 'Dil Na Jaane Kyon', 'Isi Bahane' and 'Chausath Panne'. She hosted the show 'Purushkshetra' which was acclaimed for its revolutionary courageous comment on sexuality and bringing forth Women's issues. Kirron went on to host two more shows after that, 'Kiron Kher Today' and 'Jagte Raho with Kiron Kher'.

Personal Life

Kirron's mother Diljit Singh was active in sports and dramatics in her college days. Kirron was an avid badminton player alike her sister Kanwal Thakar Singh, who is an Arjuna awardee. Her brother, Amardeep Singh was an artist, and passed away in 2003.


Kirron married actor and businessman Gautam Berry, whom she later divorced in 1985. They have a son, Sikander Kher, who is a Bollywood actor. She first met her current husband, actor Anupam Kher, in 1974, at Department of Indian Theater in Chandigarh. They afterwords bonded while working for the play called 'Chanadpuri Ki Champabai'. Kirron married Anupam Kher in 1985.

In the year 2003, she changed her name from Kiran to Kirron owing to her beliefs in numerology.

Kirron has a great fascination for jewelry and sarees. She possesses a huge collection of both and rumor is that she never wears the same saree again.
