Hanoi Women's Museum, The Legacy Of The Vietnamese Woman
The Hanoi Women's Museum is an establishment dedicated entirely to honour the contribution
made by Vietnamese women in the defense and development of their motherland. The museum commemorates the courage and dedication of the countless millions of women who have played their part towards the overall progress of the nation.
The first section of the museum is dedicated to a statue representing the Vietnamese Mother'. A pure gold 3.6 metre figure carrying a male child on her shoulder, the statue projects an impression of strength and dynamism while retaining the gentleness, femininity and beauty of the Vietnamese woman. The right hand held open symbolizes the courage and conviction to overcome any obstacle, and the uplifted child carried on the statue's left hand signifies innocence as well as triumph.
Proceeding further the visitor will be able to observe a section of the museum which depicts the accomplishments of women in the area of national defence and patriotism. The women's combative spirit is exemplified by the Trung sisters who are said to have hoisted the first flag upon the advent of invaders. A torch has been placed in this part of the museum symbolizing the unceasing patriotism and fighting spirit of Vietnamese women.
The museum walls feature a variety of photographs depicting the toils and sacrifices made by the women of Vietnam. Especially poignant is one entitled Mother's children' which shows a mother grieving over her dead children.
Many of the photographs focus on the triumphs of women in the areas of education, industry and healthcare among other fields. The perseverance, dynamism and optimism of Vietnamese women are clearly visible through the pictures.
Another sector of the museum is devoted to the formation and achievements of the Vietnam Women Union. Close to 65 years old, the organization has functioned to uplift the status of women in Vietnamese society and promote the involvement and contribution of women in the political arena.
A noteworthy aspect of the museum is a section featuring mannequins displaying the traditional dress of the 54 minority groups of Vietnam. There are also black and white images of minority women occupied in everyday activities like weaving, cooking and looking after children. With its diverse exhibits the Women's Museum will arouse the curiosity of any visitor.
