An Insight Into The Desperate Housewives Life On Wisteria Lane

Last week, one of my office mates and I were having a beaming conversation on the

season start of the much awaited comedy-drama series Desperate Housewives. This colleague had recently bought a High Definition TV and was eager to watch the hit series on this new television powered by Verizon FiOS TV. Im an avid fan of TV shows and constantly enjoy watching sitcoms and soap operas. Its kind of a stress-buster for me. As we both were discussing about the characters of this renowned series, it took me back to the very first episode premiered on October 3, 2004. The show created by Marc Cherry and produced by ABC Studios and Cherry Productions with an ensemble cast of Teri Hatcher as Susan Mayer, Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo, Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp and Eva Longoria as Gabrielle Solis and Mary Alice Young as the narrator. The series is well received by viewers and critics and it is a multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award winner.

The setting of the show is the street of Wisteria Lane in the pretty, perfect upper-middle-class, fictional American suburb of Fairview. It follows the erratic lives of a group of five main characters, struggling to cope up with their domestic life while facing numerous scandals, secrets, crimes, and mysteries that unfold in the lives of the residents on Wisteria Lane and often ends with a cliffhanger scene leaving the viewer thirsty for the next episode.

The show starts with the introduction of four main women characters: Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Bree Van de Kamp and Gabrielle Solis with a brief history of their families and neighbors on Wisteria Lane. The five women are very different from one other, but they juggle between becoming close friends and enemies at times, throughout the season. Their lives intersect amidst the events like suicides, homicides, cheating spouses, illegitimate children, gay couples, and even dead bodies buried in backyards that occur on Wisteria Lane bring them together in some way or another.

Lynette Scavo is a former businesswoman who has taken a break from her career to raise her four children. Lynette struggles to cope with her bratty children, rarely expecting help from her always traveling husband. Her neighbor Gabrielle Solis, the youngest housewife and the most glamorous of all, is a former model who is married to the rich Carlos. Without the knowledge of Carlos, Gabrielle has an affair with their gardener and tries to prevent her husband, who has little time for her from discovering it. Susan Mayer often clumsy and nosy is a divorcee and single mom with a bright teenage son and frequently gets herself into awkward situations that tend to the comedic flair of the show. Throughout the seasons, she struggles with past love relationships and her hopeless romantic notions. Bree Van De Kamp is the dedicated perfect housewife when it comes to running her household. Her uptight perfectionist ways lead her husband Rex to seek a divorce. She insists she and her husband have marriage counseling, when he wants a divorce and conceals her sons involvement in a hit-and-run accident to protect him. She scrambles to keep her family together. The unexpected suicide of Mary Alice Young keeps the neighborhood speculating for the reasons that made a perfectly rational and sane housewife to kill herself and this incident evidently sidebars stories of the other women on Wisteria Lane.

The hit comedy-drama series is hilarious and moving, and takes the viewers to see themselves in the characters of the dark lives of suburban wives and mothers and the people around them of this great comedy-drama. Yet, Im waiting to watch the next season of the interesting Desperate Housewives series.
