An Intro To The World Of Bmx
The interest in BMXing has grown massively over the past few years
. With BMX hitting its peak in the 80's with freestyle riders, the sport has never looked back. Even more impressively BMX racing is now an Olympic sport, making it increasingly appealing.
This guide will give you a crash course in how to enter the wonderful world of BMX and maybe learn some tricks along the way!
1.Get a Bike
First things first, you'll need to find yourself an awesome BMX. Make sure you know your budget and stick to it. If you're looking at getting into BMXing professionally you'll have to be prepared to spend a bit more, as quality and durability come at a price. If you're looking to do Freestyle BMX for tricks as opposed to a racing BMX the two bikes are very different. Do your research before you waste your money!
2.What is Freestyle and Racing?
Freestyle is possibly the most well-known form of BMX. Here the emphasis is on pulling a sweet trick and landing it well. Of course mastering this all takes a great deal of practice, so be prepared for some bruises and scrapes along the way.
With BMX racing it's a whole different experience. It's high adrenaline and extremely fast paced. The riders race over bumps and jumps, usually on rough terrain and pedal madly to cross the line first. To do well here the bikes need to be as a light as possible, and stunt pegs are a no-no.
3.Types of Freestyle Racing
There are four main types of freestyle BMX you can consider:
Street - The name speaks for itself. This takes place in urban areas, landing grinds on rails and 180'ing off stairs is all part of the game. Here the world is your oyster, head down to your local city or town and get practising.
Vert/Ramp - Head to your local skate/BMX park and you're bound to see a selection of ramps waiting to be used. Tricks here revolve around using the half pipe to gain momentum and pull off a high air trick.
Flatland - This form of BMX is completely unique. Here all you need to do is find a flat area to show off your tricks. The key here is balance, control and momentum. No big air is involved.
Dirt Trail - The bikes here tend to have knobbly treaded tyres to grip the dirt well. The emphasis here is to link tricks together over each jump. Why not build your own jump, dirt doesn't cost a thing.
4.Get your kit
Don't forget to protect yourself when you're doing crazy tricks. There are lots of cool looking BMX helmets out there. Knee, Elbow and knuckle protective gloves are a must. You'll regret not having them when you take a big fall.
