An Introduction To The Down Wear

Down wear, is also called down jacket, or feather dress

. It is characterized by light, soft and warm. A down wear's surface and lining are made of nylon fabric; its total weight is about 800g, which is around 1/4 of other winter jacket's weight. Down feather makes the jacket more comfortable because the feather is extremely soft. Down feather will not get hardened easily. The material that being used are normally coated fabric with high density. This can make sure there is much air inside, thus the down wear has good warmth retention properties.

Down feather is so far the best natural material used to keep people warm. After being washed, dried, classified, and other process, it can be used to make down wear. Compared with artificial materials, down feather is three times warmer.

There are mainly two kinds of down feather: goose down and duck down. According to the color, the down feather is divided into two major categories: white down and grey down. The better down comes from bigger and more mature poultry; hence goose down is better than duck down. In terms of color, white down is better than grey down because it can be used for light color cloth.

There are several requirements on the shell fabric of down wear:

Firstly, the shell fabric has to be lightweight, since it directly affects the down wear's total weight. The fabric has to be soft; because soft fabric will make the down wear more comfortable, and make the feather fluffier. Secondly, the shell fabric has to be waterproof, windproof and breathable. It may result in danger even death if you wear a down wear which is not breathable when you are climbing a high mountain. Its ability to resist water and wind will make people feel warmer. Thirdly, the shell fabric has to keep the down feather from coming out. The down wear will surely become worse if it lose too much feather. There are three ways to make the fabric better. A. Cover the shell fabric with membrane or coating, but this should be done under the premise of not affecting the fabric. B. Improve the fabric's own ability to keep the feather stays inside. C. Add a layer of cloth inside so that it can prevent feather from getting out.

Down wear has some crucial parts or accessories, including but not limiting to zipper, buckles, sewing thread, and elastic rope. There are two basic requirements on the auxiliary materials of down wear: First, those materials should have low temperature resistance, otherwise fracture will happen. Second, they have to be durable. Just imagine this: what will happen if your zipper is broken and can not work at all, but the temperature is minus 40 degrees? The zipper should work smoothly. The buckles should be closed tightly. The sewing thread should be very thin. The elastic rope should have strong elasticity and be durable.

In this winter, you will feel much warmer if you have a down wear on.
