Web design is the process of creating content on a website in such a way that is accessible by people browsing on the World Wide Web. There are in fact many technologies that come into play to transmit website content to an end-user. Besides the internet infrastructure and the servers that retain the content, there is a kind of language exchange that goes on between the web server and the end user's web browser. The content that is served on a webpage must be written in such a way that a web browser will understand how the content was meant to be displayed.

The most common form of this website language is HTML (Hyper Text Meta Language). This language defines a set of codes which have been used since the beginning of the World Wide Web. These codes essentially delineate the content and how it should typically be displayed. Of course, the web browser at the other end of the transaction can decide to display the content in any way it chooses. For example, a web browser running in a small phone may decide not to show large images or videos on web pages as the phone is unable to display the content effectively.

A typical HTML code line might be something like Japan stocks soar to record levels.'. This may initially seem odd, but by dissecting the code it is possible to understand what this HTML code will display. There are two tags in our example, the tag and the tag. In HTML, stands for paragraph, and stands for bold. So this HTML snippet is saying to display a short paragraph of text, with one of the words record in bold.

What do the and tags do? These are end tags', which respectively tell the browser where the bold text and the paragraph end.

There are hundreds of different HTML tags, which specify different things about what the content is for and how to display it. Increasingly, the code which defines how content should be displayed (e.g colors and font sizes) is being taken out of the HTML code and placed in another file (commonly known as CSS). This allows the content to be displayed and used in completely different ways on different devices. This is one step in ensuring your HTML code is as useful and portable as possible.
