An Investment for Our Future: Obama Scholarships for Mothers
Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful
. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college. Expenses like college tuition and housing grow even as the economy suffers. Besides tuition and housing, fees for books, travel and eating are often not covered. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. One group that is particularly hit hard is single mothers. To put more educated minds in the workforce and ensure that families are cared for, it's important to educate moms. The President has attempted to help by encouraging more grants for single mothers to attend school. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. These grants can be used to cover many of the miscellaneous college expenses. Single moms should also consider the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Under this incentive program, education costs up to $4,000 are cleared. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. With a few less money worries, more single mothers can attend college. Obama's efforts to improve education show that he takes this issue seriously. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill. "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." Those are the words of President Obama in his 2007 speech Reclaiming the American Dream. The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
