An Underground Locksmith - Procedure for Initiation of New Members

This is part of a companion series for managers who need to utilize alternative methods of bypassing locks or who need to train their employees in these skills. These skills are vital in the locksmith, law enforcement, storage, detective, and renting fields. Assuming you already have a potential initiate, they have been screened, and they are willing to train, you may begin with one simple yet vital training exercise.

The Padlock Bracelet

If the initiate has no background in locksmithing it is critical to their continued progress that the first lock they be given to "open" is a simple and inexpensive one. For many a decade the lock of choice has always been the trusty padlock. These generally come in three sizes (with slight variations even among them) and are classified using the BIE system [pronounced like the word buy]. Small, usually spring operated locks, are B-eginner. I locks are I-ntermediate, while E's are E-xpert locks, either because of their brand or the complexity of the latch.

Now the Padlock bracelet is generally made of a short length of chain, it is wrapped around a person's wrist (or ankle), then secured with a B-level padlock. The initiate has a preset period of time to get the padlock off of their appendage. You may or may not provide tools depending on your expectations. But keep in mind that when wearing a padlock bracelet you are limited to using one and at best 1 and hands. You may either give the initiate an hour, ten minutes, twenty four hours, or up to a week to get it off. This is dependent upon just how many applicants you have, the more applicants you have the less time you should give them. This inverse relationship [more applicants=less time] ensures that your team is the best of the bunch.

Good luck in assembling your crack-team of lock-crackers, if you found this test useful in initiating new members I hope you will follow up on this series to get more tips and suggestions on the subject of locksmithy. This has been another companion series by Article Base's exclusive Derik Mitalik, and thank you for your time valued reader; I'm always open to suggestions comments, and emails
