An anchor is usually called by several names like a news presenter
, a newsreader, newscaster, anchorman/anchorwoman, news anchor, or any similar other. The job of an anchor is to present a show on television, which can be a news show, or a show based on fiction and films, a reality show, a or a comedy show.
A tv anchor acts as a mediator between channel and audience as he/she is the one who conveys message to the audience. With the increasing popularity of telecast media, the task of news reading and presenting a program in interesting way has become crucial and more challenging too. Which means an anchor is not only required to provide information, but also inform audience in an entertaining manner to keep audience stick to a particular channel. A good TV anchor is one who is enthusiastic, energetic and vivacious. A news anchor needs to understand his/her responsibility and is supposed to impart only factual and correct information.
To be a good anchor, it is not necessary that you need to be highly qualified or you hold a post graduate degree, but a TV anchor needs to be a reservoir of knowledge, especially on the topic he/she discusses on the show. Also, the nature of the program determines the conduct of its anchor. Let us assume, if the program is based on entertainment, then the anchor should talk in a funny manner, should crack jokes at the right instant, should be spontaneous, should throw a vibrant attitude and should indulge in light-hearted conversation with the caller/guests/audience. On the other side, if the program talks about any delicate or serious issue, then the anchor needs to keep himself/herself composed and calm.
The voice is the key quality possessed by an anchor. Other things he/she needs to concentrate on include projection, enunciation and inflection. These help anchors to deliver their script in a compelling and appealing way. They need to be authoritative in their speech. The best way to prepare for this job is to watch your favorite TV show, read newspapers and magazines aloud. Also, Listen to the best journalists and try to emulate them when they speak.
Although there is no such need to be academically qualified for the job of an anchor; however, the growing demand of good anchors has led to the need of specialized training. The courses designed for anchoring also focus on other aspects like technical issues and camera handling to enhance the skills of aspirants. The training includes teaching on voice modulation, change of facial expressions, and use of proper diction as per the given script and situation.
With the growing popularity of anchoring as a career option, more and more number of mass communication institutes are offering specialized courses and certification programs on anchoring. Some of the institutes that offer courses in anchoring in Delhi include Asian Academy of Film & Television (AAFT), IAAN School of Mass Communication, Center for Research in Art Of Film and Television and Prans Media Institute.
Television anchoring has a wide scope for the upcoming students with the constant launch of various news, infotainment and entertainment channels. Therefore, it provides a plenty of job opportunities to the students to earn attractive renumeration. An anchor can opt to work in his/her field of interest like to work as a host in reality show, comedy show, game show or an anchor in a news program in a news channel. The beginners can start to work at the salary ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000. But an established anchor can earn money up to 2 lakh in a month. Apart from earning good amount of money, an anchor's job gets you name and ultimate fame too.
