Researchers have discovered the golden ticket: lose weight by eating protein and fewer refined carbohydrates.
Is it real this time? One of the most difficult aspects of dieting is keeping the pounds off after initially losing weight. A team of European researchers propagates the idea that, while eating less is beneficial for short-term weight loss, the way to keep off lost weight is to target food groups rather than a low food quantity.
The research, from the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, suggests that the best way to prevent regaining lost weight is to maintain a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
The level of carbohydrates are measured based on the glycemic index (GI), which measures food on how quickly it converts to sugar in the blood. High-GI foods spark a quick increase in blood sugar, such as white bread and most white rices. Low-GI foods, such as whole wheat breads and most fruits and vegetables, take a slower time to break down.
Researchers examined the results of 548 men and women assigned to different dietary groups with varying levels of protein and carbohydrates. Groups were assigned to eat either a low-protein/low-GI diet, a low-protein/high-GI diet, high-protein/low-GI diet, or a high-protein/high-GI diet. There was also a group with no dietary boundaries to serve as a control.
No group had restrictions on food quantity.
Of all the four groups, only those with the low-protein/high-GI diet gained a significant amount of weight.
"If everyone in America could cut back on two servings of refined grains and substitute that with one serving of nuts and one serving of beans, the impact on public health would be really potentially enormous, and that's a change within everyone's reach," research leader Dr. Thomas Larson from the University of Copenhagen explained.
Researchers do not believe the results can solve the spreading obesity epidemic, but that it can benefit a significant amount of people.
The results were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The low-GI suggestion is not as clear cut as it sounds, however. Doctors suggest that the low-glycemic principle should be applied to food groups rather than individual foods. For example, Nutella, a hazelnut chocolate spread, has a lower GI ranking than boiled carrots, though it is not the healthier food. But whole grain breads in general are better than white breads.
"These newer approaches may be more effective than conventional approaches in weight maintenance," Dr. David Ludwig, Director of the Optimal Weight for Life Program at Children's Hospital in Boston stated.
This diet may not be so optimal while the holiday season is among us, but worth a try nonetheless.
