Anxiety in Children is Not a Disease
To better understand anxiety symptoms in children
, the first thing to know is, anxiety is not a disease.
Anxiety Is Not A Disease!
We all have a self-preservation mechanism built into us! It's called the "fight or flight" mechanism and has been a part of our DNA since the human journey began! Without it we probably wouldn't have survived instead of being eaten by saber toothed tigers or trampled to death by a herd of elephants, the "fight or flight" response is what has kept the human race active and thriving since day one so if your child is suffering from panic attacks, or is showing anxiety-like symptoms, the first thing to know is, even though your child's behaviour may seen unusual, erratic, or even strange to you, your child does not have a disease.
The Child's Brain Is SimplyMaking A Mistake..
Whenever anyone of us is confronted with a life threatening situation the "fight or flight" mechanism instantly prepares our body to do one of two things: FIGHT OFF THE THREAT or RUN FROM IT! Yes, the automatic "fight or flight" reaction is great to have and can be a real life saver when the situation JUSTIFIES the response but when the response is not justified, when anxiety MISTAKENLY triggers the reaction, the results can be both terrifying and extremely dangerous.
The "WHAT IF" example..
To better understand anxiety symptoms in children, let's take a look at the "WHAT IF" example:Your child is on the way to school and has, if only for a split second, what is called a "what if" thought: "What if my homework isn't right?" -or- "What if I'm asked to read in front of the class and I get embarrassed?" -or- "What if I get dumped from the team?" -or- "What if my girlfriend doesn't like me anymore?" Whatever the thought, any one of these type-thoughts can cause a tremor of anxiety in the child and the "fight or flight" response kicks-in and their heart begins beating faster, their thoughts begin to race, and they get light-headed.. These physical sensations scare the child.. even though the child may not have been aware of the original thought that caused the reaction in the first place, they can become overwhelmed with fear. And that's when they start looking around, scanning their environment, trying to figure out what the "threat" is.
When aChild's Emotions Overwhelm Them
Not finding an external threat, and unable to understand why they feel the need to FIGHT or RUN, the child's focus turns inward and they begin thinking (unconsciously) thatthere must be something wrong with them. It's at this point the
anxiety usually escalates, the child's emotions overwhelm them, and feeling an almost irresistible urge to avoid the situation (going to school or whatever..), their body releases even MORE anxiety producing chemicals scaring the child even MORE and the cycle continues..
