Apps, e-books - are these naughty words in the world of book publishing

? Of course, many authors find themselves divided on the ethics of leaving the familiar form and feel of printed books to venture out into the world of e-publishing. Here at Wickedly Sisters (Marie Davis and Margaret Hultzee) we do understand that conundrum. We love our bound books too. Without a doubt, there is something about holding a printed book in your hand, the smell of ink on paper, occasionally folding down the corner (Oh come on, admit it, you do it from time to time!) or even underlining one's favorite passages. It was the love of bound books and a great story that birthed our own writing.

So naturally, we wrestled with bound book issues before choosing to dive into the world of e-publishing. Perhaps we even felt a twinge of guilt for forsaking the printed word. However, we remembered one man - Gutenberg. Yes, Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg, the 15th century man credited with inventing the printing press. Before him, beloved monks painstakingly copied each book by hand, embellishing them with magical illustrations-each page a work of art.

Gutenberg abandoned those traditional monk-publishing techniques to pursue the advantages of a new technology. The way we see it, the monks had it right passionately creating masterworks. Also, Gutenberg had it right when he bravely used new technology to bring the opportunity to experience the written word to more people. In our opinion, contemporary e-book publishers are carrying on both of these traditions.

E-books can offer the public more opportunities to experience a broader selection of the written word. Instead of being beholden to a few select people who decide which authors are in the public eye. No longer are big publishing houses able to censor what is available to the masses. In addition, small presses, as wonderful as they might be, are financially unable to fully compete in the marketplace with the biggies.

Therefore, e-books put the power back into the hands of the authors. In addition, readers benefit too, the books are cheaper, instantly available globally, and for much of the world, the choices don't suffer censorship.

However, what drew Margaret and I most to the medium is that just like those devoted monks, we wanted to make each page a piece of art. We saw this as a wonderful opportunity to combine our writing talents with our skills as illustrators and cartoonist. We did this by using new technology in e-books gave us that ability. For example, in our iPad App entitled, Spoon and the Moon, we were able to include original music, animations, illustrations, and interactive opportunities for other authors and artists. So, in some ways e-books have returned to the earlier, traditional monk-publishing fashion - just with a 21st century twist.
