Apple unveils a range of new MacBook Pro
Apple has released its new lineup of MacBook Pro notebook computers, featuring Intel's new processors and graphics chips made by Advanced Micro Devices, helping boost the smaller chipmaker's stock more than 5%.
The new MacBook Pros will be powered by Intel Corp's latest dual-core and quad-core chips, which were previously code-named Sandy Bridge and include integrated graphics processing.
Expensive versions of the MacBook Pro also include graphics chips from Advanced Micro Devices for added performance. Graphics processors made by competitor Nvidia had been used in past versions of the MacBook Pro.
Intel supplied the MacBook Pro with a faster, compact input/output technology called Thunderbolt, which supports high-resolution displays and devices through a single port.
The price of a 13-inch MacBook Pro, with a full-size keyboard, seven-hour battery life and an aluminum casing, will start at $1,199. The 15-inch starts at $1,799 and the 17-inch is priced at $2,499.
Unfortunately, no changes have been made to the display resolution and even the RAM is the same as on the previous generation model. The battery life has degraded, down to 7 hours on all models, from 10 hours on the 13-inch model and 8-9 hours on the 15-inch and 17-inch models. Prices are the same as the previous generation models. The new range now includes two 13-inch models, two 15-inch models and one 17-inch model. The 15 and 17-inch processors will have up to 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with an AMD Radeon HD graphics processor with up to 1GB of video memory. The new range also offers Thunderbolt I/O technology. It was developed by Intel with Apple. The two bi-directional channels feature transfer speeds of up to 10GB per second each.
Thunderbolt delivers PCI Express to peripherals such as RAID arrays and can support FireWire, Gigabit Ethernet networks through adaptors and USB devices.
Thunderbolt technology is powered by an Intel controller chip, and uses a small connector suitable for mobile devices that will be included in products supporting the technology. Several innovative companies have announced Thunderbolt technology-based products, or currently plan to support Thunderbolt technology in upcoming products, including Aja, Apogee, Avid, Blackmagic, LaCie, Promise, and Western Digital. Intel is working with the industry on a range of Thunderbolt technology-enabled products including computers, displays, storage devices, audio/video devices, cameras, docking stations and more.
It also supports DisplayPort for high-resolution displays and works with existing MacBook adaptors for HDMI, DVI and VGA display. All three new models continue to use the same aluminium unibody design as previous MacBook Pros, but also include refinements like a high definition webcam. FaceTime for Mac, which has been in beta for around a month, was added to the App store for Mac today to coincide with the launch and costs 59p.Apple also previewed the new version of its operating system, OS X Lion. This will borrow heavily from the innovations made for the iPad, including full integration of apps across all Apple devices.Following on from today's MacBook refresh, Apple is expected to unveil a second-generation iPad at an event on March 2nd.
