Are Manual Or Electric Toothbrushes Better?
A dentist Palatine office is going to have to answer a number of questions about what kind of toothbrush most of their patient's should be using
. As with many other oral health care products, there is so much variety on the market currently that it can be very tricky for people to understand what their best options are when it comes to choosing a toothbrush. Without even bothering to get into all the different varieties of brushes which are out there, the question that most people need to deal with first is whether or not they should be using an electric or an old fashioned manual toothbrush.
The jury is still out in part on this issue. Dentists have weighed in differently on the issue many times since the advent of the electric toothbrush, and it still remains unclear if there is truly an advantage one way or another. Instead, it seems to be that there are pros and cons to each of these types of brushes.
With an electric toothbrush, the advantage is that these can allow people to do a better job of brushing their teeth if they have limited mobility or pain problems of any kind. That way, they can still get adequate brushing without having to manually brush. They also can be useful when they come with additional features like timers which tell you when you've spent enough time brushing. The downside to these types of brushes is that they can be very expensive sometimes, although cheaper models can be found. They also require batteries, which is another expense. There were in the past also problems with brushes which brushed to hard which can cause problems such as pushing back the gums.
Manual brushes have been the standby for many years, and these have a number of upsides. First, they are cheap, and easy to replace. They are easy to take with you anywhere to ensure that you can be brushing even when away from home for periods of time. The only downside is that they do require more effort to use than an electric.
According to those who have studied the issue, there is no overwhelming difference between the qualities of cleaning presented by the two kinds of brushes, although certain specific types of electric toothbrushes may have the slight edge. What the Academy of General Dentistry maintains though, is that the most important characteristic of any brush is whether or not you will use it.
