They are very familiar with the area and have great business relationships with other local businesses. They often can provide you with lower rates and faster service when you are only having deliveries made within your city.

Although it is an oversimplification, the truth is that the large companies like FedEx are sometimes better suited for doing business with huge companies, while smaller companies are better suited to working with small companies. Smaller companies survive by forming strong business relationships, which is very possible when working with a smaller courier company. A huge international company though may have courier needs which can't be met by the limited number of vehicles and available drivers within smaller courier companies.
