What are endocrine diseases
What are endocrine diseases
Endocrinology deals with endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions called hormones. Endocrine diseases are disorders of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a complex group of glands (organs that make hormones). These are substances that help to control activities in your body. The glands that make up the endocrine system include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus. The endocrine system consists of several glands in different parts of the body that secrete hormones directly into the blood. Hormones have many different functions and modes of action.
Endocrine diseases can be divided into three groups:
1)Endocrine gland hypo secretion(leads to hormone deficiency)
2)Endocrine gland hyper secretion(leads to hormone excess)
3)Tumors of endocrine glands (benign or malignant)
Endocrinologists diagnose diseases that affect your glands and treat hormone imbalances. It is done by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the endocrine system. Your primary health adviser refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system. Some endocrine disorders include:
Diabetes
Thyroid diseases
Metabolic disorders
Hypertension
Over or under production of hormones
Menopause
Cancers of endocrine glands
Cholesterol disorders
Lack of growth
Osteoporosis
Infertility
In several cases, endocrine disorders may be symptomless or mild enough to not require any treatment. When symptoms of endocrine disorders are severe, they can usually be treated by correcting the hormone imbalance. This is performed by means of synthetic hormone administration. In cases such as prolactinoma, surgery or radiation therapy may be used.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar (specifically, glucose) in the blood. Patients with diabetes have too much sugar level in their blood. Controlling blood sugar helps prevent serious problems that can be caused by diabetes such as problems with the eyes, kidneys and nerves, which can lead to blindness, and dialysis. Endocrinologists treat diabetes with diet and medications, including insulin. They also work closely with patients to control blood sugar and examine them so they can prevent health problems. There are three main types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes
Gestational diabetes
Some causes may include overweight, lack of exercise, family history and stress increase. Patients with diabetes are more likely to have coronary heart disease and stroke. Gestational diabetes is more dangerous for pregnant women and their fetus.
Though, Diabetes is not completely curable but, it is controllable to a great extent. Healthy diet helps to keep your blood sugar in normal and adequate range. Healthy diabetic eating includes
Limited intake of foods that are high in sugar
Eating smaller portions at a time
Eating a variety of whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables every day
Eating less fat
Limiting your use of alcohol
Using less salt
Thyroid
Thyroid patients have problems with their energy levels. They may also have problems with muscle strength, weight control, and tolerating heat or cold. Endocrinologists treat patients with too much or too little thyroid hormone (caused by either an overactive or underactive thyroid). They help patients reach a hormone balance by replacing or blocking thyroid hormone; receive special training to manage patients with thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer, and enlarged thyroid glands.
