Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils derived from plants and flowers such as mint

, lavender, jasmine, chamomile, etc, in order to promote someone's physical and emotional health and well being as well as the balance of the mind, body and spirit.

These oils when introduced into the body through inhalation or topically, are known to soothe and heal the mind, body and spirit. They have also been used to soften the skin.

Essential oils are derived from plants and flowers through distillation or cold pressing. The tiny molecules in essential oils are picked up by the extremely sensitive nerve endings in the nose which sends the molecules to the emotional center of the brain.

The brain then secretes various chemicals such as endorphins to alleviate pain or serotonin to calm and relax the individual partaking in the aromatherapy session. The effects are both physiological and psychological.


In order to obtain aromatherapeutic benefits, it is important to obtain pure essential oils that were derived from plants and flowers. The labels should state that the oils are pure. It definitely pays to spend a bit more on aromatherapy products because only the pure essential oils contain antibiotics, vitamins, antiseptic and natural hormones that the synthetic oils do not contain.

Be careful if the label states "essence of..." or "extract of...", etc as are not pure essential oils and will not provide the full benefits. It is important to note that pure oils are very strong and can irritate or burn the skin.

If using the oils during massage, do mix the essential oil with a carrier oil such as almond and sunflower oil in order to prevent burning or skin irritation. Citrus oils are very sensitive and when applied directly to the skin, can cause hypo pigmentation or sunspots. Through massage, the oils can be applied to any areas of tension and energy blockage can be addressed and a state of calm and relaxation manifested.

Different oils provide different benefits and you need to research the oils that are appropriate for your needs. The essential oils are often applied through inhalation, massage, compresses or through lotions.


Massage

When applied through the healing power of touch, aromatherapy can relieve anxiety, general stress as well as insomnia while promoting relaxation and relief from mental and physical fatigue. Essential oils such as lavender, rosemary and geranium are excellent at relieving stress, anxiety and panic attacks.

When you feel particularly stressed, an aromatherapy bath is just what you need since it can be extremely relaxing and put you in the right frame of mind. A "herbal comfort pack" is a pillow that is usually stuffed with flaxseed, chamomile, jasmine or lavender that you can place in the microwave for a few seconds and then over your eyes while you are relaxing on a couch or in the bathtub. Placing the pillow in the microwave allows the oils to fully release their scent.
