Arranging for a Year of Free Education for Kids
The ECCE or Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme in Ireland facilitates a free year of childhood education and care for children at a pre-school age. Children are considered to be eligible for the scheme when they fall in the age group between three years and two months and four years and seven months.
Several daycare services and playschools participate in this scheme. They receive a capitation fee from the State education authorities. In turn, they offer a free year at a pre school to children who fall in the qualifying age bracket. The total number of school hours is predetermined and span a set period. In most cases, children become eligible for the programme in 1 school year. An exception is made only in the case of a child who suffers from a disability. He/she would thus benefit from a programme that is extended for another year.
The programme comprises of a set number of hours and the division is based on the type of service that the child opts for. There are various types of services available. These include:
Day-care services: If your kid opts for a part-time or full time day-care service, then the pattern for the free year is set at a two hour and fifteen minutes session spread across a period of 50 weeks. If the kid attends the session for a longer period, beyond the stipulated hours, then you will have to pay for the additional time. Children who manage to attend a part time service thrice a week can opt for three daily sessions spanning three hours and forty-five minutes every week for a period of fifty weeks.
Sessional services: If the child manages to attend a sessional service spanning half a day as part of a toddler group, Montessori, playschool or Naionra, the distribution is made as three hours per day for five days a week. The session is completed over a span of 38 weeks only. Additional hours of attendance will automatically translate into payment for the services. If the sessional service is not carried out for five days a week, then the normal pattern is followed. This implies a pre school year comprising three hours of classes for half an hour for four days a week. The classes are continued for a span of 41 weeks.
A number of childcare service providers opt for the ECCE scheme. You can select one of them and send you kid for a free preschool year in Kildare. Such childcare service, that forms a part of the scheme, must provide an appropriate educational programme that abides by the principles of Siolta. The framework is followed throughout the country when it comes to early education and childcare. Parents can gather further information about the ECCE by referring to the state's educational portal. The State has certainly done its bit in ensuring the fact that children enjoy their right to early education. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure access to the programme for your child.
