Art Deco Period Engagement Rings
Art Deco started in the 1920s and influenced many different areas of design such as industrial design, architecture and interior design
. Fashion and art were also greatly influenced by it, as was jewellery design. Art Deco was seen by many as stylish and modern.
Engagement rings of the Art Deco era incorporated sapphires, emeralds and rubies (both natural and synthetic). Emeralds from Colombia, rubies from Burma and sapphires from Kashmir were widely used.
People have different opinions about what makes jewellery Art Deco, because it is a mixture of influences which include modernism, cubism, neoclassical, constructivism, futurism and art nouveau which have all combined to make Art Deco. There is a lot of demand for Art Deco engagement rings and therefore they can be difficult to find.
Art Deco engagement rings usually have quite a flat band with either a large stone or alternatively large groups of stones. The stones are normally cut in one or more styles including emerald cut, pear cut, pentagon, triangle trillion cut, trapezoid or marquise. Popular metals for the rings were rhodium, palladium and platinum. The design often consisted of a single large stone which had a number of small square or triangular stones surrounding it. Contrasting colours were also frequently part of the design.
In terms of their style, Art Deco rings weren't intended to have the simplicity of a diamond solitaire ring. Because they used many stones in their designs, the ring bands tended to be thicker than those of other eras. This was necessary due to the number of stones and also had the effect of keeping the ring in position on the wearer's finger.
Engagement rings from the Art Deco era frequently had a stepped design of stones leading up towards the centre stone, similar to the design of the tower on New York's Chrysler Building.
The elaborate designs with their use of contrasting colours and angular design make these engagement rings a popular choice for couples who appreciate vintage jewellery. These rings have historical significance, plenty of style and sophistication.
At the moment, these rings are highly sought after and can be considered not just jewellery but also art.
