The greatest benefit of arthroscopic surgery is the fact that it is less invasive than the traditional surgery. This will allow the patient to have a shorter course of rehabilitation and it can be done as an outpatient procedure. For athletes, this will mean a more rapid return to their sport.

There are several conditions that can be treated in this manner. Labral tear is one. The labrum is a cuff of tissue that surrounds the hip socket. It is key in supporting the joint. If a tear occurs in the labrum, a piece of the tissue can be painfully pinched in the joint.

If there are loose pieces of cartilage in the joint, they can also be removed using arthroscopic surgery. The small pieces can also get lodged in the hip during movement. This is very painful.

Although there is some controversy surrounding the treatment of arthritis with arthroscopic surgery, some believe that there are patients who will benefit. If bone spurs are the causative factor in the pain, they can be removed. This must be done early on in the diagnosis of arthritis and does not always give the hoped for relief.

Recent studies have determined that 80 per cent of athletes with hip arthritis that is started by the internal ball and socket join can return to their sport of choice in about nine months. It also states that they would have the ability to function at the same level they had before the procedure.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks. There are a number of important blood vessels and nerves surrounding the hip joint. Although nerve damage is seldom the case, it can happen. The nerve most frequently involved in this is the sciatic nerve. Also the pudendal nerve and the femoral cutaneous nerve can have some injury. Any nerve damage has the potential of causing severe pain and other issues.

Before undergoing the surgery, the patient needs to be aware that there is also the possibility of infection or continued pain. Although this is not a frequent occurrence, it can happen.
