Recently I heard about a really intriguing experiment involving quantity vs quality in the book "Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking".This experiment was carried out in a ceramics class that had been split into two groups.Group A's score was assessed on the quantity of pots they made. For example, 55 pounds of pots for an "A", 45 pounds for a "B", and so on.Group B's mark was assessed on the ultimate quality of their pots. At the end of the exercise they only needed to create just one pot, but it really had to be outstanding.OK, quickly - answer these two questions:=> Which of the two groups do you imagine manufactured the best pots?=> Which of the two groups do you think you would rather be in?It may surprise you to find out that it was the group who focused on the quantity that had the highest number of quality pots.Why might that be?It could have been that the team that targeted in on high numbers had any pressure of performance removed from their grade - they just need to knuckle down and start manufacturing pots.With all fear of failure gone, the team was free to act, even if that action ultimately led to a poor product.However, most times the outcome of the quantity focused team was not a poor product ' why is this?By making more pots, the team had much more opportunity to learn from failures. With each additional pot that they created, they improved a little bit more.So, how can we apply the findings from this experiment to an article marketing exercise?I am a quality focused worker. If I were ever given the choice of being placed in one of these two groups and not knowing the conclusion of the trial, I would've chosen the quality focused group.I do not think that the test is downgrading the ultimate quest for quality, however I do think it's enlightening us to how we can improve as article writers. There is a value to writing a steady stream of articles as we grow as writers.Here are some tips on how to apply the the findings of this experiment:1 Start off by thinking about your articles as a campaign, rather than as individual articles. This will definitely help you get the momentum started, and you will resist the temptation to concentrate too heavily on any one article.2 If you are a perfectionist who will happily spend days getting your article just right, try giving yourself a time limit - say just one day - to finalise the initial draft.Wait just one day, then proofread your article; again set yourself a time limit.The time limit will really help you focus and be more productive. Your article quality will not suffer. This plan should help you get over the need to obsess over one single article.It's important to remember, with an article marketing campaign you have to learn to make quality articles on a steady basis. You have to learn to balance quantity and quality.3 It is also helpful to set yourself a maximum word goal. Pick a target of approximately 500-700 words.4 - If you are already more quantity focused, and you are submitting many more than eight articles a month per website using automatic article submission software, then really scale down the quantity and try to focus more time on quality.Create an initial article draft, then leave it to sit for the next twenty four hours before reviewing it a second time. Take a little more time on each of your articles, and pay much more attention to the many nuances of your creative.It is important to always balance quality with quantity when doing an article marketing campaign. Some of you could need to set targets to write high quality articles more consistently and faster.
