Asin Thottumkal was born on 26th October 1985 in Kochi
, Kerala. She belongs to a Malayalamspeaking family. She is the only daughter of Joseph Thottumkal and Seline Thottumkal. Asin father who was a businessman now handles Asin career as her secretary. Her mother is a surgeon.
She has now moved to Mumbai to be with her daughter. Her name Asin means pure. Asin studied in Naval Public School and went to St. Theresa Higher Secondary School after matriculation. She then studied at St. Theresa College and obtained a degree in B.A. English literature.
Meanwhile, she assisted her father is his business. And at the same time she started her modeling career by doing advertisements for Colgate Toothpaste and Fairever Cream. This is how she was noticed and she landed a role in Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vakan (2001).
Asin was only 15 years old when she made her debut in the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vakan (2001). It Was A Supporting Role And She Was Paired Alongside Kunchacko Boban. Her Next Movie Was A Telugu Film, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003), in which she played a Tamil girl.
This movie landed her the Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her second Telugu film was Shivamani (2003), opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna. She won the Santosham Best Actress Award for this film. Her next Telugu movies were Lakshmi Narasimha (2004) and Gharshana (2004).
In 2004, Asin acted in the super hit M Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi, opposite Jayam Ravi, which became her steppingstone in the Tamil Film Industry. It was the remake of the Telugu movie Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vakan (2001). Asin played the role of a Malayali girl instead of a Tamil girl. Later she acted in the Telugu movie Chakram (2005) and the long delayed but super hit Tamil film Ullam Ketkumae (2005).
Ullam ketkumae (2005) made her a muchwanted face in Tamil films. In 2005, a. R. Murugadoss signed Asin to play the lead role in Ghajini, alongside surya sivakumar. It was a huge commercial success and Asin won her first Tamil filmfare award for best actress. She then went on to act in sivakasi (2005), majaa (2005) and varalaru (2005).
In 2006, she acted in annavaram, but her role had no scope to deliver. In 2007, Asin starred opposite ajith kumar in aalwar, but the movie failed at the box office. Her next film pokkiri (2007), opposite vijay and directed by prabhu deva was a major success.
Her performance was loved and appreciated by fans and critics. Her last release in 2007 was hari vel. Asin portrayal of a tv anchor was well received. In 2008, Asin starred opposite superstar kamal hassan in one of the biggest blockbusters of the south indian film industry, Dasavathaaram.
She played her first dual role alongside kamal hassan ten roles. The critics lauded her work. 0n 25th December 2008, Asin made her debut in bollywood with ghajini, opposite aamir khan. The movie was a huge Bollywood success and Asin reprised the role of the model kalpana.
Asin received positive reactions from the fans. The critics as well as the bollywood film industry applauded her power packed performance. Her next bollywood film london dreams (2009) opposite salman khan and ajay devgan, bombed at the box office.
