Ask Yourself First Before Picking Up A Major In College

Picking up a major is not an easy thing

Picking up a major is not an easy thing. Most people will ask you at 18 to make a choice that will greatly affect your career and your life in the future. An 18 year old student will often make an unsure decision. I think this is the main reason why adults (older than 22) begin school later and do so well in it. They are more certain with their decision and they will make effort to succeed. Regardless of the age, in choosing the right major one should take into responsibility that the decision will ultimately affect your future.

Adults must ask themselves the questions that will help them decide on the right major to study in college. This article lists some of the common questions that adults must answer for them to make the best decision that will for sure affect their future.

* In what things are you good at? Think in a more general way. Know your skills and your talent. Are you good at motivating people? Are you good at solving hard problems? Do you have an eye for details? Do you have the marketing skills? Can you share your ideas to anyone? If you answered yes to some of the questions, then probably you should pick a major that will relate with your interests and skills.

*What job do you want? The ultimate goal of adults in college is to graduate and eventually find a stable job in the future. Before picking the major, adults must consider the job they want to have. It is better to search the marketability of the major. What is currently the trend of the society? Who are the in demand workers? Adults must take these things into consideration. Competition is always present in the society. That is why adults must be wise in choosing the major to study in college.

*What are your values? If your passion is helping people through volunteer works, then you are probably called for as a social worker, a counsellor, or a nurse. If you think you are good in dealing with people and making business plans, then you can choose a major that involves business and marketing. If you see yourself teaching the children with right values and education, teacher will be the best profession for you. Know your values and from that make a decision on what major to take in college.

*How do you see yourself after college? Adults must have a futuristic view. What you do today will affect your future. Make sure that when you choose your major you are viewing yourself in the future. We have no idea of the happenings in the future. But we can do the right decision today and prepare for the future. If you want to see yourself managing a company, then choose a major that will make you a manager someday. If you want to work in an electronics company, then choose a major that will help you succeed in electronics field.

These are just few of the questons that should be answered personally. Remember that you should make your own decision of the major you will take. It is okay to ask guidance from your family and friends, but you should make the final decision. The major that you are going to take up will affect you and the rest of your life. Thorough research and reflection of yourself should be performed. You should balance them out and choose widely.
