Aspects to consider when you do business across the countries-Nilsa Fleury
When doing business abroad, decision making and negotiation reflect the differences across cultures. Some countries in Europe, Asia, Arab, Mediterranean Region, and Latin America are more formal, hierarchies, status, and power. To demonstrate respect for each one you must dress appropriately and follow their etiquette and values.
Other countries, such as USA, Australia, New Zeland, Nordic Countries, and Netherlands reflect smaller in power, status, and value egalitaian attitudes.
Another important aspect to be considerated is the status barrier (Gesteland, R. R. (2006). There are four classes of disadvantage in this situation: young people, women, people with lower positions and men or women of any age involved in international sales.
Discrimination against women in business occurs especially in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Japan, where women only have clerical positions. However, women are successful entrepreneur in more egalitarian cultures.
Next, the youth barrier makes a difference in some countries, where young people are not taken seriously. Aas a result they are introduced by older people learn the local business and demonstrate expertise. Some countries in Latin America and Europe also give value to the background and level of education and knowledge of the businessperson.
These ideas can be applied to make a good decision in business across the countries and can be specific in some situations. Doing business in other countries is a great challenge when we consider the local culture and values of each one. Greeting people in business needs to be specific and respectful, especially in formal cultures. The negociation in informal cultures creates equal rights and opportunities. Knowledge about formal and informal culture leads to better the behavior and decision-making of people in international business.
Some good examples of greeting people have in China and the importance of the environment for Arabic people are in evidence to make business. Discrimination against women and young people does not make sense when thinking about the changes necessary to preserve the future of cross-cultural business around the world.
The culture in Brasil is formal, which is changing by generation, but respects for older and experienced people are being preserved. Therefore, Brazil is changing and it has many opportunities to grow in the oil and the energy fields, which make the country and the respective economy stronger. The perspective in Brazil for now and the next generation is improving with cross-cultural business: Brazil receives people from around the world who are very interested in investment there. In the meantime, the formal culture has bringing some changes to receive the foreign people better. This year's decision to have the Olimpic Games 2016 in Brasil makes the people from Brazil begin to prepare more to work with different cultures for the next years. The application of these key points such as culture, values, respect, discrimination, and greeting others in a formal and informal culture helps to make better business between different countries.
There are different behaviors in specific situations of negotitation for formal and informal business abroad. Greeting, introducing people, and making decisions with different cultures have relevant aspect in each country.
The discrimination against the women in this century needs to change in Korea, Japan, and Asia with a new mentalitly of global world. Women have the advantage to be more cautious and sensitive rather than men in decision-making, which will need to be considered by different cultures as the countries cited above.
The communication in different languages is other important point that business people need to beaware of when preparing to do business abroad. I learned how important it is to travel to different places and to know about the local culture. Asking the correct questions and keeping an open mind when it is necessary are other important points to performing better.
Listening is a great opportunity to learn about different people and cultures. Giving feedback also makes a difference to being successful in business.
Collectivism and individualism are other aspecst to consider when doing business abroad, because they are part of the culture and need to be analyzed before in order to avoid making any mistake.
The concept that young people are more acceptable for business in USA is one barrier that needs to change, because it is unrespectable to older people who have good experience to share and teach. All these aspects are important to build the next generation of business, precisely in Brazil where many changes are coming. Knowing about the culture of each country is the goal to more respect and trustiamong different people. It is the great challenge of this century, which business, environment, and relationships between different people can be better.
The future is now and the opportunities to change become easier when we have knowledge, expertise, and information. The other important aspect to consider is communication more than one language is important to know to make better negotiations with others countries.
