Attractions In Louisburg

The City of Louisburg is an exciting place that offers a lot history to tourists and to its inhabitants

. There are two main attractions in this city.

The first is the Powell Observatory. The Powell Observatory was constructed in 1984 by its club members. The Observatory is located a mere 25 miles south of Kansas City in Lewis-Young Park.

Lewis-Young Park is located slightly north of Louisburg Kansas. Its location in the country provides ideal sky viewing conditions because it does not have the light pollution from the city. The light pollution can make it very difficult to see the stars and other space entities at night.

Powell Observatory is the proud home of the biggest telescope in a five states. This telescope has a 30" mirror.

The public is allowed to use this telescope for viewing the night sky during specific, scheduled times. The club members and private researchers also enjoy the use of this magnificent telescope.

The Powell Observatory is also home to a 16" telescope that is mainly used for public programs and a 12" computer controlled telescope that is used mainly for research projects and by club members. The public visiting times are hosted every Saturday night during the clearer months of May through October.

There are also programs that start when it gets dark and provide educational information on the skies, astronomy, and physics. These programs also include tours of the observatory and telescope viewing of various space objects.

The StarBright programs are very popular throughout the Kansas region for school trips, families, and church groups. Many times club members will set up their personal telescopes for the enjoyment of the public.

Donations to the observatory for upkeep are very much appreciated. Most groups pay $5 per adult and $3 per child.

The observatory can also be reserved for a personal star party for a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion. At least one experienced astronomer will take your party through the observatory for an admiration of the stars, moon, planets, and the other beauties of space.

Another historical attraction in the Kansas area is the connection Louisburg has with the Lewis and Clark Story. This history is concentrated on the Louisburg Cider Mill.

The Louisburg Cider Mill provides a variety of old fashioned soft drinks and ciders. The most requested drink is their authentic, old-fashioned sarsaparilla drink.

This drink is one of the many things that remind tourists and town inhabitants of their history in America. Many believe the examples of bravery, sacrifice, and hope for the future of the past have a distinguishable impact on those living today.

As they connect with the past through historic sites, such as the Louisburg Cider Mill, they are reminded of those examples and are given strength for their own lives. These historical sites and traditions are very import to who the American people are.

The Louisburg Cider Mill also creates a Lost Trail Root Beer that is enjoyed by thousands of tourists and locals. These people have been enjoying the Louisburg Cider Mill's Lost Trail Root Beer and authentic sarsaparilla drink since the mill was established in 1977.

The mill embodies the time period surrounding 1803. During this year, Thomas Jefferson convinced Congress to support the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to explore the west.

The story Lewis and Clark bring back has become one of the most exciting and inspiring adventure stories of the United States. Lewis and Clark covered over 8,000 miles.

Their journey began where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers cross. From there they traveled across what was seen as a untamed wilderness.

They met new peoples, saw new lands, and crossed new rivers. This expedition encountered over 50 Native American tribes.

The Native American tribes suggested valuable tips and survival strategies for their part of the land. This information was immensely valuable to the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

These travels opened the west to the United States. These historical and exploratory sites are vital to the learning from and connection to the past.
