It's stated that there are only seven other structures resembling this theatre in the world, and it is the foremost of the purpose-built theatres of that particular type in New Zealand. Renowned for the magnificent outlook of the foyer which was built in a style inspired by Indian culture, it encompasses seated statues of Buddha, domed ceilings and spiral columns. The main hall was constructed in the same fashion with imitating designs of other countries such as Moorish garden turrets, tiled roofs, Abyssinian panther statues as well as minarets, turrets and spires.

Open again to the public in year 2000 after a massive renovation project that was carried out, the new theatre brought with it a lighting concept that enhanced the atmospheric style of what made the theatre so popular. Although after the renovations the seating capacity had to be reduced, this spectacular theatre is today largest to be found in the city of Auckland.
