Audi 2011 S5 Offers Luxury Performance
The passion that propelled me through a recent test drive began with a Start Engine
Stop button a few inches from my right thigh on the wide centre console of the Audi S5.
One trigger-finger press upon that chrome button ignited my Brilliant Red coupes 4.2-litre, 354-horsepower V-8 engine which straightaway let loose a thunderous roar not unfit for a Pride Rock lion.
Well, it wasnt a Mufasa-esque roar, but more of a deep-throated purr from an adolescent Simba. Regardless, it sounded darn awesome. And yes, I saw The Lion King 3-D last weekend.
Dressed in Premium trim, our S5 tester also brought forth a shout of approval from Olivia who fell for its Magma Red Silk Nappa leather seats almost as hard as her dad.
That my four-year-old daughter would express such emotion over her rear-perch milieu was a little scary... but mostly cool. Her initial reaction was understandable for sure.
The S5 was an absolutely dishy car both from the cockpit and the sidelines.
In fact, only a handful of testers Ive had over the last few years have attracted so many approving stares and positive comments. The latter of which came from several hardened gear heads no less; one of whom said thats the car Id buy if I won the lottery.
With room for four adults, the S5s near-perfect interior sort of contradicted the notion that it needed to be, and was meant to be, driven hard.
Along with its plush, red-leather, sport seats, the S5 offered a first-class look and feel inside.
Aside from the seemly room in the rear for my nine and four year olds, only the smallest (or least liked) of your adult friends should be offered that space.
The trunk, at 345 litres, supplied enough room for two large suitcases or an adult-sized bag of hockey gear and you could slide sticks in through its narrow pass-through behind the rear armrest (Audi included a ski sack in our testers trunk... just to prove a point, I guess). The rear seatbacks also folded for additional cargo options.
Back up front, the S5s gauges and instruments were positioned in two teardrop pods with its 8,000-rpm tachometer and 300-km/hr speedometer that flanked a vehicle-information display. Its multi-media interface was simple to work and well-shaded from sunlight.
Some of the notable creature comforts inside our tester included its Bang & Olufsen sound system, a leather-covered, multi-function sports steering wheel with shift paddles, three-zone climate control, power heated front seats, telescoping steering column, and a shaded, tilting glass roof (oh, and four drink holders).
The S5s asphalt prowess offered more driving stimulation for me, Id be willin to bet, than Charles Hicksons 1973 alien probe provided him (Google it!).
With 0-100km/hr-in-five- seconds capability, needless to say, grocery-store runs were made without my better-half having to text me to hurry up home with the milk and eggs.
The S5s V8 carried its 4,400 lbs. with complete poise while its six-speed automatic transmission offered very distinct shifts when on its own; it was also an absolute hoot to work with the paddles.
When it came time to stop, the S5s brakes pulled it down from high speed with absolute authority.
The S5 straightened out tight turns and sweeping corners at high kms. with ease and very little, if any, understeer, all helped along by a 40-60 per cent power ratio to its front and rear wheels thanks to its standard Audi quattro drive system.
I figured the 19-inch alloy wheels that were wrapped in Z-rated, high-performance summer rubber also helped out in the well-funded Department of Handling and Spirited Affairs.
Classy. Sporty. Powerful. Aggressive. Those are four adjectives that could describe the S5s exterior presence.
I thought it had subtle, but pleasant lines from front to rear and it certainly stood out in busy city traffic on my daily work commutes, especially with its unique front and rear fascias and its carbon-fibre-look trim.
Some notable outside features on our tester included adaptive bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and rear lights; headlamp washers; heated, auto-dimming side-view mirrors; a sport suspension; and an adaptive suspension damping system.
On the whole, the S5 was nothing less than a spectacular driving experience that was cut far too short.
It offered a luxury feel and look, Batmobile performance, and ample room for two young kids in the rear and a good load of groceries in its trunk.
The S5 vessel was a pleasure to pilot and was one of those rides that would without doubt intensify ones passion for the road.
