Recently I visited CSIR Technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I came to know that "BOD Biosensor" for water quality monitoring was developed by Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi.

BOD bio sensor is an automated device to quickly determine BOD of waste water in different industrial effluents. Testing and validation of BOD biosensor is based on microbial mixed culture for rapid BOD determination in waste water.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is the most important used parameter in water quality monitoring. It is also important in designing of effluent treatment plant. This BOD test takes considerable time, from 3 to 5 days. We can say 3 days at 27o C or 5 days at 20o C and it consumes lot of energy. To overcome these factors, attempts have been made to carry out the test in short time through the technique using BIO-SENSOR probes. This technique involves selection of suitable microbial composition for using Bio-sensor so as to degrade the wide range of wastes. In this endeavor, Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology (IGIB), CSIR, Delhi has developed BIO-SENSOR and instrument for rapid BOD test.

BOD sensor developed by IGIB was analyzed real wastewater samples and compared with the same samples, 5-day BOD was also determined by the conventional method. The comparative BOD values for pulp and paper mill industrial wastewater (untreated & treated) as examined by both the methods, are relatively good between the two methods.
