Bachata Dancing
Bachata dancing has exploded as a popular social dance in the United States and other non-Latin countries around the world
. It's no surprise. Not only are the basic steps easy to learn, but the sensual nature of Bachata dancing make it appealing to many. It can be heard in almost any latin music club today. Even Salsa dance festivals have included Bachata dance classes in their workshop schedules due to the high demand for it.
Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic, but is danced differently around the world. There are two main styles that can be seen almost anywhere you go. The Dominican style and the Modern style. Both styles have three steps and then a tap step. The tap step is often synchoronized with a pop of the hips. This is because Bachata music has an accent in its rhythm on every fourth beat, which is when the tap step normally occurs. This is the basic rhythm of Bachata, which makes it quite simple for anyone of any skill level to learn. But Bachata can be danced to different timings as well, adding fancy foot syncopations, similar to cha cha, to make it challenging for even the most advanced dancer.
When dancing Bachata, it's important to keep most of the movement in the lower body and keep the upper body relaxed and still. The hips are absolutely essential in Bachata dancing, so the knees should be slightly bent to allow for greater movement in the hips. The hip movement should be smooth and fluid, and it is was once even believed that the more frequently the hips were used, the more feelings the dancer had for his/her partner.
Bachata can be danced in both open or closed position and can switch back and forth between the two positions at any given time. Just like other forms of partner dancing, Bachata has a "push and pull" hand and arm connection used to communicate the lead. Until recently, Bachata did not involve complex turn patterns like other partner dances such as Salsa. It consisted of more step variations and footwork syncopations, with almost the entire dance happening from the waist down. As it has evolved, the footwork has become much simpler and more turn pattern variations have become more complicated, including turns and dips.
