Weight Loss Science In Simple Terms More and more weight loss plans are incorporating studies to back up their diet plans

. However, if you do not know what all that legal mumbo jumbo means, it might as well not be in there. Here we will discuss what all the "science" is about. What does "Associated With" Really Mean? - This is a common one in lots of diet plans. You hear or will read, "A high fat diet is "associated with" weight gain." You also see that eating a low-carb diet is "associated with" a fast weight loss. In scientific terms, "associated with" means an occurrence greater than one would expect just by chance. It does not mean anything has been proven. In fact, any number of variables could cause the association. What do "Blind" and "Double-blind" Studies Mean? - To best describe this, we will use the familiar Pepsi Challenge. In the Pepsi Challenge, it was a "blind" study. The participants did not know if they were choosing Pepsi or Coke. However, the researcher did know which one was given. For the Pepsi challenge to be "double blind," neither the participants nor the researchers could know which soda was which. Double Blind studies are given more credit as there is less chance for researchers to influence the results. What is a "Random Sampling"? - This is when everyone has a equal chance to be chosen. Generally, we think of political polls as "random sampling." Anyone with a phone number has the potential to be called and sampled. What is a "Reliable Test"? - As far as science is concerned, one test is never enough. Scientists have to publish their work for other scientists to reproduce. If other scientists can reproduce the test and get the same results, the test is considered "reliable." This is very difficult in weight loss studies as consistent results depend on a range of factors. Reliable results are hard to come by. What is "Statistically Significant"? - Sometimes you have changes that are not enough to be "statistically significant." This is best explained in steroid use which, although illegal, still has some effects. If a person was to take steroids to help him or her put on muscle, then they would be working out. Therefore, muscle gain is to be expected. For the steroid use to be "statistically significant," the muscle gain would have to be statistically more than one would expect from just working out. i.e. A man adds 10 pounds of muscle using steroids. Statistically, the same man was expected to put on 9.5 pounds. While that is more than expected, half a pound is not "statistically significant." What this Means to You - Whether you choose a weight loss diet, seek nutritional counseling, seek a chiropractor, or all of the above, you need to know the lingo of the results everyone is throwing at you. Once you know the facts, you can make an informed decision about who you want to see and why you want to see them.
