Back-to-school: Five Great Collegiate Movies To Watch On Satellite Tv
With the return to pencils and books, it's official that summer has disappeared
. And while some students who have to spend days locked into desks rather than roaming and exploring the great outdoors might be sad, others are excited for what fall means. For those who were high school seniors at the beginning of the summer, what the changing seasons actually means is a chance to, at long last, head off to college.
For those who are college-bound, the experience of living away from home from the first time is going to be something quite memorable. Today's dorm rooms are considerably more high-tech than the images from classic movies. Instead of toga parties, you're likely to experience high-tech frats with HDTV screens blasting popular video games and music videos. But the general spirit of college--and of people in general--is something that tends to not change. And because of this, watching older films about college is just as exciting for those who are leaving for dorms for the first time.
Whether an undeclared freshman or someone who has been plotting an escape from small-town life for years, here are five great collegiate movies to watch on satellite tv before heading off to school--or going back to school. Some are classic, some are newer, but all are pretty great.
#1 - Animal House. The classic college film, and the beginning of the highly successful run of National Lampoon films that lasted decades longer than it should have. Whether it's the scene where John Belushi bashes in an acoustic guitar after being irritated by hearing a faux-sincere serenade or the entire idea of misfits triumphing years before the world of dot-com success, "Animal House" is a film well ahead of its time.
#2 - Revenge of the Nerds. For those who might not be starting on the football team, a look at what happens when those who are bullied around manage to succeed in a major way. Another classic 1980s comedy, and one that you're likely to find airing on satellite tv on any given channel at least once a day.
#3 - PCU. Truly underrated classic college comedy that features a memorable performance by underground fun sensation George Clinton. A number of familiar faces, too, and a cast that was clearly destined for bigger and better things. This is another college film that continues the theme of lovable misfits, though the send-ups of the different groups on campus manages to nail most cliches right on the head. Still pertinent today.
#4 - The Rules of Attraction. The kind of college film that focuses on a different kind of university student--the one with disposable income from mom and dad to buy sports cars and HDTV sets for the dorm room. This nihilist romp through liberal arts school featured career-changing performances by a number of previously "good guy" faces. While not critically successful, "The Rules of Attraction" managed to do its source material--a book by Bret Easton Ellis--well enough. A cult classic.
#5 - Back to School. Rodney Dangerfield is delightfully crass and un-PC in this film that somehow manages to endure. Old guy goes to college at a time when he's decidedly not the right age, yet ends up being the life of the party. A classic.
