A recent studying done by the University of Wisconsin suggests that overeating for long periods of time effects the way your brain approaches appetite control. The brain usually sends signals telling your body that you have eaten enough calories to be full and have enough energy, but over-nutrition for extended periods of time can cause otherwise inactive pathways in the brain to activate and wreak havoc on your body's natural appetite suppression monitor.

Researchers have found once the pathway is reactivated it not only affects your body's natural ability to balance your eating, but it can also shut off signals to increase energy levels once you have consumed calories, resulting in people feeling sleepy and lethargic after meals instead of energized and ready for activity. Researchers have also detected that this pathway resists insulin and leptin, which are both necessary for appetite control.

While this study has provided insight into difficulty for some individuals to successfully diet due to a lack of appetite suppression, they were unable to determine a fix. During the study, they determined that a medication would have to shut off the pathway within the hypothalamus but allow it to remain active for immune system purposes.

So what are dieters left to do when they are seeking weight loss success? There are methods of appetite suppression that many individuals have found success with.
