Bag Big Fish In Alaska
I have an unusual part-time job
I have an unusual part-time job. I deliver delayed baggage to passengers from a number of airlines from our local airport. It has been quite interesting to see what kind of things get delayed, what gets high priority, and how passengers behave when there has been a delay. These delays happen for many different reasons, but one I find amusing is the passenger likes to leave previous baggage tags on from other flights, and then gets upset when baggage goes to their last destination, not their current one.
Another is weather problems that are unforeseen and baggage arrives occasionally before the passenger does. The favorite time of year for me to deliver, however, isn't ski season to the resorts, or holidays, rushing packed presents to arrive by Christmas, but rather fishing season. "Why fishing season?," you may ask. It is usually summer time, for one, but it also means I get to hear the fishing stories as people retrieve their hard won salmon or halibut from me.
I did not know of the huge surge to try Alaska for fishing until I started these deliveries. I enjoy calling people to tell them their fish have arrived. The fish are always well packed when they come from a professional fishing trip, so they come still frozen with dry ice most often. Some people pack them in plastic coolers wrapped in tape, some in waxed boxes that are well sealed.
In rare cases the fish have been delayed for more than a few days and having once driven my van with raw, warm fish no longer fresh from Alaska, I do not desire to repeat the experience. Fortunately this is a rare occurrence. Most often we get to sample the fish we deliver while listening to fish stories. I love the halibut best, but the salmon is also superb.
Once I delivered 20 boxes of fresh caught salmon to a family that had taken 4 grown children and two other couples on a big trip. The first on my list was the mom and dad, who called all the others in surrounding towns and had some come meet me there. We got to chat about the wonderful time they had in Alaska, on the fishing boat, with the guides, and with the friends and family. It made me really want to do something that memorable as well. The sample they sent home with me just cemented that desire.
