Bagore Ki Haveli: A Storehouse Of Mewars Opulence

There are many names given to Udaipur, the olden capital of the former principality of Mewar in Rajasthan, India

The Haveli of Bagore was built in the 1700s by the then Chief Minister of the Mewar Royal Court, Amir Chand Badwa. However, it was not until a century later that the royal abode officially came to be known as the Bagore Ki Haveli. This aristocratic mansion built upon the Ganghori Ghat on the bank of the Pichola Lake was left unoccupied for 50 years until the West Zone Cultural Centre rescued it from dereliction in 1986.

The West Zone Cultural Centre renovated the building as a museum; a storehouse of historical artifacts portraying the patrician culture of Mewar. The house itself is a peephole into the grandiose lifestyle of centuries past, housing over a 100 rooms with a series of assorted terraces, courtyards and balconies. The interior of the haveli is adorned with fine colored glasswork and exquisite murals, while the exterior walls are decorated with startlingly detailed carvings typical of the periods intricate architecture. The rooms host exhibits of trinkets, rich apparel and jewelry belonging to the havelis former nobility, as well as modern art.

The Bagore Ki Haveli also celebrates the culture of Rajasthan by staging live evening performances of its traditional dance and music, transforming the complex into a mini-citadel of light and sound and recreating for a fleeting hour the opulence and splendor of the citys ancient forebears.
