Bangalore - Unveiling The Silicon Valley Of India
Situated in Deccan Plateau, Bangalore in Karnataka was earlier a peaceful city and as such was known as 'pensioner's Paradise'
. But more commonly, Bangalore is known as the 'City of Gardens' since it has large number of parks and gardens. Now Bangalore is a major centre of information technology and is known as the 'Silicon Valley of India'.
The city has architectural landmarks, research and scientific institutions, natural lakes, shrines and of course parks and gardens. It is an ideal place for employment-seekers, particularly in the field of information technology. Bangalore is the major exporter of information technology from India.
The earlier name of Bangalore was Bengaluru. According to folklore, in the 11th century Hoysala King Veer Ballala lost his way in the forest while hunting. The hungry king was served boiled beans by an old woman and he was obviously happy. The king then named the place Benda Kaalu Uru (meaning the 'Town of Boiled Beans'). Bengaluru was its adaptation. The colonial rulers changed it into Bangalore. Now the city has got its original name Bengaluru.
Among the historical monuments, Bangalore Palace was constructed in 1862. It is a small replica of Windsor Castle in England. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, built in 1791, is a two-storeyed ornate wooden structure. Vidhan Soudha, built in 1956, is an imposing granite building. It houses the state legislature of Karnataka.
There are several popular places of worship in the city. Among the temples are Bull Temple, built in the 16th century, and Shri Nimishamba Devi Temple. There is an ISKCON temple in the city. Among the churches are Infant Jesus Church and St. Mary's Basilica. The latter is the oldest church in Bangalore. Among the numerous mosques are Tawakkal Masjid, Jumma Masjid, Masjid-e-Khadrik and Dargah Hazarat.
Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens, situated in an area of 240 acres, was built by Hyder Ali. It has a wonderful Glass House and is home to 1000 species of flora. The Lal Bagh Rock there dates back to millions of years. Cubbon Park, located in the heart of the city, is home to numerous trees and plants.
Bangalore is known for beautiful lakes like Ulsoor Lake, Hesaraghatta Lake, Nagavara Lake, Madiwala Lake and Hebbal Lake. Among other attractions in Bangalore are film city, Gandhi Bhawan, Ravindra Kalakshetra and Race Course. Bangalore also boasts of several IT parks and the famous Indian Institute of Science.
