Bangkoks Rich Architectural Legacy : The Jim Thompson House And The Vimanmek Teak Mansion

Highlights include the ceramic and porcelain displays which are as extensive as the kings appetite for collection of fine china, in addition to ancient photographs of the mansion and resplendent household matter. The gold and silverware room is also worth the visit as it stocks precious pieces from the kings many travels abroad including works of Peter Carl Faberge of Russian court fame. Elegant ivory items are also on display as are Art Nouveau style glassware. The richly decorated bathrooms, bedrooms and the sprawling Audience Chamber is equally enthralling in this attraction, where one finds priceless artefacts and object dart at every turn. Guests can also enjoy classical Thai dance forms while touring the venue as a special treat that takes place daily for the benefit of its many visitors.

Having entertained the likes of author Somerset Maugham, Jim Thompsons House lays claim to an illustrious past that is nearly impossible to rival. This traditional Thai residence which was the sanctuary of silk industry giant Jim Thompson, is also a museum which records the evolution of Thai art, artefacts and antiques. As an enthusiastic collector of precious Asian antiques, household items and other finery, Thompsons most prized possession may have been the idyllic home in which he decided to house his little treasures.

A combination of six original teak edifices from across Thailand, the house was finally assembled in the heart of Bangkok by an Ayutthayan carpenter in the late 50s. The venue also has a lush garden that mimics the nature of a tropical wood where plants and trees have grown to create a harmony unique to its surroundings. Must-see items of display here include this avid antique connoisseurs impressive collection of porcelain, paintings and sculptures which includes 18th century Ayutthaya Buddha images, exquisite Thai porcelain pieces and 19th century wood carving such as the one illustrating Phra Malais ascent to Indra's heaven.
