Barbecue Sauce On The Pacific Coast

Twenty five years ago, when I was young, and adventurous

, I signed on as a crew member of a salmon fishing boat. I've always liked boats, and the ocean, so, I figured why not make some money at sea. I was the fourth of a four man crew, which meant I got all the jobs on the boat no one else wanted to do. I had to fill the ice hold, clean the boat and get it shipshape for the next trip, and, do the grocery shopping. The captain told me to get enough supplies for a ten day voyage, which I did. I filled five grocery carts with everything I thought we'd need, even a couple of bottles of barbecue sauce, probably hoping we would stop off at some exotic tropical island, where I would throw a private barbecue party for three or four gorgeous girls.

My head was filled with fantasy as we motored under the Golden Gate Bridge, and out to sea.

Once we cleared the shoals, reality set in. There was work to do, and all of it was hard, wet, and smelly. We got up before sunrise, baited hooks, set lines, caught salmon, cleaned them, and then iced them down. We usually finished after sunset, cooked dinner, flipped a coin to see who got night watch, and went to bed. We were far enough out to sea to let the boat drift at night while we slept, but one of us had to stay awake, and at the wheel, until work started the next day. And it was when Andy had night watch our troubles began.

We'd been fishing for eight days, when the captain discovered we were almost out of food. All that was left was ten pounds of coffee, and the two bottles of barbecue sauce. Good old Andy had spent his night watches eating everything he could find. The captain went ballistic. Not only were we out of groceries, but we hadn't caught many salmon, which meant no pay for all of us.

The next morning we got our orders. We were going to fish until the boat was full, no matter how long we had to stay out, and we were going to eat salmon, and drink coffee until we did.

I now know how to cook salmon at least forty different ways, and most of them include barbecue sauce. We stayed out there for eight more days, salmon and coffee for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We put coffee on the fish, and we put barbecue sauce in the coffee. Finally, our luck changed, we had a couple of great days, and filled up the boat. I made good money, and some good friends, but although I still like barbecue sauce, I'll never eat salmon again.
