Barcelona, Spain Offers You A Rich History With Modern Conveniences
Barcelona became quite popular after hosting the 1992 Olympic Games
. The world began to see then that Barcelona was a modern city that still held onto its past. This city has some interesting sites that mix today with yesterday and showcases the unique spirit of the people and culture.
Barcelona has some amazing architectural sites, but the city also has some of the most beautiful parks. About 10% of the city is park area. The biggest attraction in the city is the FC Barcelona's stadium. This privately owned stadium is the largest in the world, seating 100,000 people.
A Look At the Past: History is important in Barcelona and something you will get a glimpse of at every turn. Despite all the modern attractions in the city, Barcelona remains largely historic in nature. Roman and Gothic influences can be seen throughout the city. The medieval influence of the past can be seen in sites like the cathedral and various churches and basilicas. Most of the sites that you will want to visit are hidden treasures from the past.
Sites to See: As you make your way around the city you will want to take side streets so you don't miss any of the attractions hidden down in alley ways or back out of the main areas. At the corner of Calle Portaferrissa is Palau Moja, an 18th century palace that is the headquarters for the history and culture department. On Rambla de Sant Josep you will get to see some of the local flora as flower vendors usually cover this area. Be sure to keep going along so you can stop in at the wax museum, Museu de Cera.
In the business district you can take in some of the great architecture. In the area of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Consell de Cent is the area nicknamed the Block of Discord. Here many different styles come together to create an interesting mosaic of architectural styles coming together.
Most visitors to Barcelona want to stop at the former site of the Olympic headquarters. The Palau Nacional, the Castell de Montjuic and the Spanish Village are all places to stop before heading to the Anella Olimpica or Olympic Ring and the Olympic stadium, Estadi Olimpic.
The Gothic Quarter is another top attraction in Barcelona, displaying the Gothic history of the city. Here is the Catalan Gothic cathedral, Placa de la Catedral, Palau Episcopal and Placa Sant Jaume.
You may want to pick up a tour guide before you take off to explore the city. Many of the sites are not right out in the open and you may miss something you do not know what you are looking for. Also be sure that you book your hotel early, preferably online, so that you can get the best deal on accommodations.
You want to be able to freely enjoy the city without having to worry about your hotel reservations. Barcelona has a lot to offer and you will want to have your accommodations set up in advance so you can take off and tour the city as soon as you get there.
