Basics Of Concrete Repair And Restoration

A typical issue that people experience with concrete is the development of cracks

. Concrete develops cracks due to different causes, and they always need to be repaired. Before doing anything, you should bear in mind that safety precautions should always come first. Wear eye protection gears, gloves and at least a reliable helmet before starting repairs.

The first step in repairing a large crack in concrete begins with removing the damaged concrete itself. Using a heavy-duty hammer and chisel, carefully chip off the damaged concrete. You can start chiseling at the portion of the concrete where it is crumbling and disintegrating with a depth of about an inch to make it easier for you to dismantle it.

When you are done taking the damaged concrete apart, you have to undercut incisions on the edges of the area that needs repair. In order to do this, you have to widen the bottom of the hole, and not at the top. So that the walls inside are inclining inwards as they go upwards.

Once done with the undercut, remove all debris and rubble left behind from the portion that needs concrete repair and restoration, and you have to keep it moist as much as possible. Let water drip into the hole overnight, or sprinkle some manually in ever few hours over the course of an entire day.

Next in concrete repair restoration product is required. Mix some cement with less water until it forms like a sort of paste or gel, rather than fluid. Usually, the cement has two parts more than water. Set the cement-paste mixture aside for later use. Then, mix another combination of cement, but this time, a little thinner but still heavy enough to coat the surface, inside edges and walls of the hole. This step needs to be done as fast as possible while still doing it properly. The cement needs to be applied right before it dries up.

Lastly, fill up the crack with the paste-like cement you mixed earlier and stuff the crack downright through. After doing so, you should let it set for a couple of hours. Then, cover the portion that underwent concrete repair and restoration with plastic wrap and moisten it several times a day for a week. This procedure is called cement curing. Remove the wrap after the repaired concrete turns out rock-solid again.
