The BCS National Title Game is difficult to handicap at the beginning of the season
, but here we are in Week 13, only a few weeks away from the end of the regular season, and we still don't have a clear understanding of which teams will play for the National Championship. There are a few favorites, though. Florida, with the No. 1 spot in the BCS and AP rankings and an undefeated record, has the right positioning at this point to get to the BCS Title Game.
However, Alabama has moved into the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings. Alabama and Florida are slated to play one another on Dec. 5 in Tuscaloosa, so one of these teams-Florida or Alabama-will have to take on a loss in the last week of play, effectively eliminating their chances of making the Title Game.
Texas has the No. 3 spot in the BCS rankings right now, so they're also a favorite to play in the BCS Title Game. But who are the long shots to make the game? Is there a chance that Texas, Florida and Alabama will not enter the BCS Title Game in Pasadena? Will you see two long shots battle it out with your BCS National Championship Game tickets? First of all, let's go over the scenario that might allow a long shot to play for the title. First, Florida would need to lose its upcoming Thanksgiving game with Florida State, and then also lose against Alabama, dropping themselves from No. 1 to, let's say, No. 10. Alabama would need to lose to Auburn next week, and then barely eke out a win vs. Florida on Dec. 5, dropping them down to, let's say, No. 4. Texas could lose to both Texas A&M and Nebraska, insuring that they leave the door open for yet another team.
These outcomes are probably not going to happen, mind you. The odds are against it. It is possible, however unlikely, that these teams could all take dramatic falls in the last few weeks, and other teams could exploit it. Here's who could actually pull off a miracle and get to the title game.
TCU - The TCU Horned Frogs, members of the Mountain West Conference, could become the next national champions if the above scenario plays out and the Frogs finish the season undefeated. TCU will have to beat New Mexico on Thanksgiving Day. Hopefully the undefeated season will be enough to take the Horned Frogs to the National Championship, but that's still not a sure thing. It would be much better if the Mountain West had a conference championship football game, allowing the Frogs another chance to beat (presumably) BYU or Utah, two teams that will probably be ranked.
Cincinnati - The Bearcats are currently undefeated and ranked No. 5 in the BCS. They have two more games with which they can improve their BCS rankings, with a Nov. 27 meeting with Illinois and a Dec. 5 matchup with Pittsburgh. The Pitt game will be even more important to win because Pitt is currently ranked No. 8 in the AP.
Boise State - The Broncos once again find themselves in the unlikely hunt for a National Championship, as they boast an undefeated record of 11-0 with two games remaining. It will be hard for the Broncos to be impressive in their final two games, as they play two of the lower-ranked Western Athletic Conference teams, Nevada and New Mexico State.
