Be a baseball-hitting machine: Tips from a Hall of Fame baseball coach
The body is a hitting machine, one where all parts work together to ensure maximum output
, or, in this case, power and contact. Identifying and solidifying the proper position and action for each of the seven body parts used in the hitting process will significantly improve a baseball player's batting average. Here Coach Joe Brockoff, inventor of the bestselling Super 8 Hitting System, breaks down the seven body functions essential for optimum hitting power and speed.
1. Shoulders are the platform, providing support for the hands, and the launch pad for going directly to the ball. Keep the shoulders soft in the hitting process and work with the hips to square to the ball before the hands fire at the pitch.
2. The head, serving as the control tower, must remain in control of every pitch. The head hits' every pitch. It controls the action of the rest of the body.
3. The arms act as springs as the body turns toward the pitch and must remain in place on the platform until they actually spring out to hit the baseball. Often the hitter is too anxious to use his arms too soon. This creates a poor stroke.
4. Use the legs for support and stability. Legs support the hips and the upper body, standing tall outside of a small crack in the knees.
5. Feet are the foundation of a good hitting stancethe base of all operations of our hitting machine. The foundation must be strong or the whole body will be weakened. A hitter could understand how important his feet are if he had to hit a ball while standing on ice. Our feet push against the ground to gain the force necessary to hit the ball. Hitters therefore cannot have dancing feet.
6. Hips serve as the engine, the driving force behind our hitting action. The hips run and control the body by creating a rotary action, which turns the shoulders and takes the body as a whole to the ball.
7. Lastly, the dynamite action of the hands. The body turns the hand into the direction of the ball and they explode! The hands provide the ultimate speed in the hitting action.
