Beach House Decorating: Feel Better With An 8 Step Room Make-over
If your like me, sometimes you might feel like your stuck in a rut
. My best medicine for getting out of being "stuck"? To re-decorate a room!
Any room. I don't care...just start something.
In fact, my mother says that I think all of life's problems is fixed by a de-clutter.. or maybe just adding a two letter hyphen to anything like re- and de- will do it (think re-do and un-do!)
Any Feng Shui expert would agree with me I'm sure. Sometimes you just need to create "movement" and a change of energy in your space (the cool word designer's use for the place you live or work.)
I'm a big fan of moving stuff around. Haven't you ever experienced when the living room just didn't feel right? And then you moved the couch... re-arranged the T.V., swapped the art on the wall...
Magic! Your whole life feels better and you can settle into a movie night on the couch feeling "just right."
Hmm... I think I've proven my point then. Sometimes just moving the furniture really does make you feel better. You see the body and the mind subconsciously likes to work from a point of symmetry.
Symmetry is when objects or things reflect each other. That's actually why, when you change the couch to the common "L" layout or "H" arrangement, it feels good.
If you look to the body, if you were to draw an imaginary line down the center of your head towards your feet, you'd notice even the body is in the class "L" shape set back to back! Amazing hey?
To change how your feeling immediately do these 8 Steps:
1. Pick a room in your "space" your not liking
2. Immediately de-clutter something... your aim is to get rid of excess objects or things you don't absolutely LOVE!
3. If you can't throw them away or give them away, place in a box and store in the garage... see if you want them back in a month.
4. Analyze the rooms layout.
5. You want your room to make symmetrical "sense." A classic rule of thumb layout for any room is to create and L shape layout or an H shape layout. What this means is the couch and chairs would follow the shape of the L. In the H shape layout, the couch and chairs are opposite each other with a coffee table in the middle. You could do the same in a guest room with two single beds following the lines of the H.
6. Run from room to room in your space and grab other things you LOVE. Your looking for art, cushions, throws, sculpture, rugs, candles and even furniture.
7. Put together a new look... go to your local home decor store if you want something new.
8. As a rule of thumb stick to no more than one accessory color per room plus a neural color.

9 Steps to easy Beach Decorating Fast
1. White, white, white.... cover cushions in white to brighten and freshen. Get your couch and chairs covered in a fabulous sturdy white cotton
2. Bring in sisal rugs
3. Use large jars to hold simple collections of same look shells, pillar white candles or bouquet of driftwood (use brown designer luggage tags to write descriptions and tie with cotton string)
4. Paint furniture white
5. We love white lamps, think chunky style not thin or dainty
6. Bring in stripes if your going for a traditional beach look
7. If you love tropical bring in more taupe colors with accents of palm tree green
8. Blinds in bamboo or wooden shutters on the windows
9. Lanterns and more lanterns (big ones!)
You may be doubtful that clearing the clutter and re-arranging the couch will make you feel better... but just give it a try!
I think you might find it's contagious... you'll start with one room, then love the feeling so much it will spread to another room!
