Kovalam Beach

Located 16kms away from Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam is one of Indias most popular beach resorts. Its captivating, sun-clad beach and crystal-clear waters are a favourite haunt of backpackers from around the world. Kovalam's sheltered natural bay is surrounded by two rocky headlands. It comprises four beaches namely; the Samudra beach, the Ashoka beach, the Eve's beach and the Lighthouse beach. The beaches located to the south of the promontory are crowded when compared to the ones to the north, which provide the perfect setting for sunbathing, swimming, catamaran trips, and water sports.

Shanghumugham Beach

Situated about 8kms from the city, Shanghumugham Beach is a popular city beach that lies adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram airport. Some of the prominent tourist attractions here are an indoor recreation club, children's traffic training park, a star fish-shaped restaurant and the Matsya Kanyaka, a massive 35mt long sculpture of a beautiful mermaid.

Varkala

A renowned pilgrimage centre, Varkala is a must-see for every tourist who

visits Thiruvananthapuram . According to a popular legend, the sage Narada threw a cloth made from the bark of a tree into the air, and it landed in the spot where the little beach town of varkala is now situated. Narada then asked his disciples to pray for salvation or redemption at the newly created beach. The beach, thus, came to be known as Papanasham beach or the "Beach of Redemption". Since then, this beach came to be related with ancestor worship, as lots of Hindus immerse the ashes of their dead here.
