Beauty Schools Seen As Attractive Choice

, cosmetology school offers a rewarding option for a fulfilling job that is in constant demand. And the most enjoying part about working in cosmetology is that you can look good by striving to make other people look their best.
The U.S. Department of Labor says employment of hairdressers, hairstylists, cosmetologists, skin care specialists and shampooers is projected to grow between 10 to 20 percent through 2010. Employment of manicurists and pedicurists is expected to increase 21 to 35 percent over the same period.
Those figures being touted by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) project a bright outlook for cosmetology and esthetics, which comprise a healthy industry reported to generate $60 billion a year.
Founded in 1924, AACS is a national nonprofit association that is open to all privately owned schools of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences. Licensed cosmetologists provide a variety of personal services that help clients look and feel their best, the AACS says.
These services primarily include the care and treatment of hair, nails and skin.
Cosmetology, beauty and barber schools train people at all stages in their careers to become licensed practitioners in their fields. As the AACS reports, these school programs include:
Cosmetology: a full cosmetology program usually covers hair styling, skin-care, nail care and makeup.
Esthetics: the study of applying makeup and performing facials, massages, waxing and reflexology.
Nail Technology: the study of the art of nail art, design, tips, forms, wraps and gels.
Electrolysis: a medically recognized permanent hair removal method for face and body.
Teacher Training: a program of instruction to prepare a cosmetologist to teach future cosmetologists.
Along with the satisfaction of a functional career, the pay can be rewarding as well. According to both the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) and the U.S. Department of Labor, salon professionals can average up to $50,000 including tips.
AACS explains that a cosmetologist's ability to bring in and maintain regular clients is another factor in determining potential earnings. According to The U.S. Department of Labor, many cosmetologists and other personal appearance workers receive commissions based on the price of the service, or they earn a salary based on hours worked. Cosmetology or beauty school degrees can lead to a large selection of career choices. These include cosmetologist, hairstylist, hair color specialist, perm specialist, esthetician, nail care artists, manicurist, salon owner, school instructor, salon manager, salon coordinator the list goes on. Other segments of the industry include the more elaborate sides of the business from fashion show stylist to beauty product designer.
The National Cosmetology Association (NCA) has represented the professional salon industry since 1921. Its membership includes more than 25,000 salon owners, hairdressers, nail technicians, estheticians, educators and students.
Even in tough times, the salon industry finds a way to make its profession appealing to its employment base, students and customers.
In todays fluctuating economy, following the worst recession since the 1920s, its more important than ever to broaden our understanding of the inner workings of the industry, including consumer behavior, retail strategy, and how to keep our clients coming back to us again and again, said Mark Goodman, NCA Council President, in a March 2010 NCA newsletter.
