Beds and mattresses
Linda Evangelista was famously quoted as saying she didn't get out of hers for less than ten thousand dollars a day. John Lennon and Yoko Ono famously staged a protest for peace simply by sitting in theirs, and Elvis Presley allegedly slept on one shaped like a giant hamburger.
Beds are an integral part of our lives. For most of us, the bed is where we are born and where we go to when we die. We spend on average two thirds of our life in one and a large part of our health and wellbeing is dependent on which frame and mattress we choose yet deciding on the right bed for our sleep and health needs is an important decision which is often overlooked.
Firstly, when choosing which size of bed you think you will need, you need to take into account two sets of dimensions; the room and the sleeper.Single beds can feel too small for taller larger built people and could leave you with little space to move around in during the night, while king size beds ordouble beds will take over a tiny space, making the room impossible to use for anything other than sleeping (Which, of course is the main point of a bedroom, but what about floor space for getting ready in the morning?)
When choosing a mattress, take into account any particular health requirements you might have, such as allergies or back problems. There are a range of orthopedic mattresses available as single beds, double beds or king size beds. Split mattresses are also available for those with bed mates who are experiencing mobility or other health issues. These can be fitted with electrical mechanisms which assist the sleeper with sitting up in bed, while their partner might prefer a different type of mattress.
If space is an issue, there are sleeping options for those living in limited space such as a bedsit or another small room. Wall beds can -as the name suggests- fold away conveniently into the wall and are also known as "Murphy beds". If you are living in rented space however, this can be a problem as you would probably need to discuss installing one with your landlord. In which case, there are always futons or sofa beds.
Think about storage space, too. There are double beds and king size beds which are available with drawers which slide out from under the bed. Single beds with cupboards underneath are called cabin beds and are popular with children these are particularly handy when there are lots of toys to be cleared away at short notice. As a final note, if you have children then deciding with them what bed to have is incredibly important to give them a healthy start with making good sleeping habits. Not only will this mean that your kids will sleep better, they will probably be less likely to climb into yours in the morning and start jumping on you, meaning a good night's rest for everyone.
