Beginners Guide To Buying A Used Touring Caravan
Buying a used tourer can offer a great introduction into caravanning and is probably
one of the best holiday choices that money can buy! It is important to equip yourself with a basic understanding of what to look for. To make the buying decision easier, we have produced this essential guide offering advice on both what to buy and how to find great value caravan insurance when working to a tight budget.
The last 12 months has seen a surge in caravan sales and used units in particular. Many budget-conscious buyers view the touring caravan as a cost effective way of making the most out of their cash. Demand though has taken its toll on the number of used caravans left on dealership forecourts, with first-time buyers facing depleted used stocks.
If youre not 100% sold on the caravanning lifestyle or cannot use the caravan to its full advantage, go for a good, recent used model. New is great but for the same money a used caravan may have several retro-fitted extras that could save you hundreds.
Remember touring caravans can last for years with some vintage 15 year old caravans still commanding a price of 3,500+. Buying an older tourer can reduce the cost but also heightens the likelihood that it may require work. Make sure to check that the caravan has at least got some service history? Caravans can have problems such as damp and delaminating sides. Is there damaged trim or cracked windows? Check that side panels dont move! If they do walk away! Bulging sides can spell major troubles.
There are some great older tourers for sale that have been well serviced and looked after. They may not have the latest mod cons and look slightly dated, but look carefully and you could come away with a tourer that costs the price of a weeks holiday abroad.
With layouts it is personal choice. Fixed bed designs have been in vogue since 2002. Two berths with end washrooms are still a popular choice. Multi-berths do sell well particularly the double dinette layout, with central kitchen and washroom opposite. Always in demand are the six berth models with fixed bunks.
Twin axle caravans can be more stable to tow, but are not as easy to manoeuvre on to a difficult pitch as a smaller, single axle, caravan. Budget for a motor-mover to make the task easier, especially if you are a solo caravanner. If youre after an imported make, check spares are still easy to get and that your caravan insurance company will actually insure it!
The world of dealer specials can become complex. In the late 90s the manufacturers offered their dealers a standard range caravan that could be fitted with extras and also given its own name. These models usually came with better quality upholstery, extras such as alarm, heavy duty corner steadies and extra lockers over the standard model range. They cost more but can be well worth hunting out because of the extra kit.
If youre not in a position where you have a very experienced caravanner to help you, then head to the nearest dealership. The dealer will make sure that your caravan is serviced, is safe to use, has the correct model year and most importantly has not been stolen!
Once you have bought your tourer, dont forget the caravan insurance before you head off! Finding low cost caravan insurance online is easier than you think and it is good practice to comparing prices against your current caravan insurer to make sure you arent paying over the odds. Enjoy your caravan and use it, its no good sitting on your drive!
