Beginners Guide to Billiards

Billiards is not only about pool cues and pool balls; there are certain tips and

tricks which can help you get an edge even over professional billiards players. There are millions of big and small things associated with the game of billiards which make the game a bundle of excitement and skill.

Some basic yet important tips are as follows

Follow Up

Don't get up just after the shot is completed. This is one step which differentiates between a professional player and an amateur. Suppose you move your body just for a jiffy before the shot is actually completed, there is a chance that your aim might alter. This may also affect the impact of the pool cue against the cue ball and eventually the motion of pool balls. This happens mainly due to the fact that the players anticipate the movement of the pool balls in advance. No doubt, with practice, you will be able to anticipate the shot, but it is advised to remain down after the shot.

Distractions

Don't get distracted while taking the shot. Your body should be still with your eyes bent downwards with concentration. Billiards also has a certain level of complacency as it is seen that many people tend to talk or eat or even drink something while taking the shot. The effect may be small but it does affect your shot. Chewing gum has to be avoided at any cost as your head movement can influence your shot. Always remember that there are many opponents who try to distract you with their tricks so make sure you do not fall pray.

Planning

Make sure you plan well before your strokes. However hard you practice, the game of billiards cannot be planned fully. It is more like making small decisions and taking risks depending upon the situation. A good billiards player plans his stroke in terms of force applied and swing generated via the pool cue to the cue ball. Before you start the stroke, you should know what you want from the stroke. You should also be able to make out what would be the position of the pool balls once you stroke is completed.

Practice Regularly

This is one thing that many enthusiasts fail to do resulting in complacency and loss of form.

Lastly, be at the table when your opponent takes the shot. Do not go to your seat and get busy in unnecessary things. Most billiard players say that it is better to view your opponents' game at least when you are playing against a better player. Billiards creates excitement hence players are prone to simple mistakes. In addition, it is advised to chalk the tip of your pool cue regularly.
